Help - Starter solenoid needs replacement?
My car has had this intermittent problem since last year. Previous owner wired the fuel pumps to start once the high highbeam flasher arm has been pulled back. So this is the process to start.
1 - turn key to run position 2 - pull back flasher, fuel pumps buzzzzzzzzz.... 3 - turn key to start & vroom! So the problem that is happening sometimes is that there is no vroom just silence except the fuel pumps buzzing. No click from the starter solenoid either. Fuel pumps are running fine but nothing happens when I turn the key. So I repeat the starting process about 10-12 times and finally it'll start. Could this be symptom of a bad starter solenoid?

I would put the wiring back to stock first and see what you got.

Suggests a bad starter solenoid to me, or bad circuit from the ignition switch to the solenoid. No "click" from the solenoid tells you it is not being powered, either due to a bad circuit or the internals of the solenoid, like a stuck actuator. Be sure the voltage to the solenoid is adequate and your battery is fully charged. The way the car is wired may be drawing enough away from the starting circuit to prevent engagement of the solenoid.

Check the starter by directly running power to it with jumper cables. If the solenoid does not activate you have identified the problem.

I bought this after my solenoid failed, saved me a whole bunch of money over buying a new starter:
Pretty easy to swap too

use a test light.
compare the light to the battery cable at the starter to the yel wire when cranking. should be the same. you cant use a MM for this. I MM can measure 12v and there not be enough current to pull in the starter. if you have an aftermarket car alarm check that. (remove it). make sure the ground strap from body to tranny is clean same with battery connections make sure battery is fully charged and good. take it to advance and have it tested. fix the wiring back to original after you get this fixed. the solenoid can be "rebuilt" if that is it. but you need to know how to solder. let me know if interested.

Thank guys. FWIW I have already checked ground strap and all battery connections. They're all good. I have no car alarm and no evidence of one being installed originally. I'll do some testing one night this week.
