seat brackets to put 77 seats in a 70

Does anyone know if someone makes brackets to install 77 seats in a 70 ? I have currently made some and not to sure that they are real safe. Or do the brackets from a 77 mount in a 70 ?

I'm wondering the same thing as my springs are broken. I'm in no rush since the car won't be on the road for awhile, but it's still a lingering question.

I got mine from Professionally Engineered parts (http://www.peparts.com/). I believe our fine host also sells them. The newer seats have a track spacing that is about 2" narrower than the older seats.

I put 77 seats in my 73. The plates included some welded in ears for the lower seat belt attachments as well. You will need to do something as the Seatbelt in the early cars are part of the seat not the car.

I've deleted this reply do to an error that Jon pointed out. I guess this is what happens when you do things from memory. I looked at my 72' Coupe and John is indeed correct. I don't however know why it worked in a 67' Coupe I had ten years ago because it did work. Oh, well!!

Sorry if this wasted anyones time.

Just to clarify. The top pair shows the original early plate on the left and the plate on the right is the plate you fabricate.

The bottom pair shows the adapters you fabricate for the left and right side of a seat.
The measurements of 29.9cm and 40.9cm represent the footprint of the highback seat bolt mounting holes you are installing.

Boboloo,

How did you address the seat belt attachment?

Actually I didn't. The car was a 67' and it didn't come with seat belts. I did this ten years ago when I was younger and more foolish. I didn't think anything about driving without seatbelts. Nowadays my daily driver is a Mercedes with ABS brakes, airbags and whether it was required by law or not I would still wear seatbelts.

As far as belts in this scenerio I would think later style belts would be the ticket. So I guess you would have to weld in the mounting spots on the chassis.

You go to www.peparts.com/pepbelts.html and get one of these:

When I made mine, I used basically the same pattern as Bobby except for the stock. I used angle iron. This way I had a vertical ‘tab’ to drill and tap for the seat-belt bolt. Now the seat-belt bolts to the adapter bracket.

This is not a great picture but it shows a crappy view of my aluminum seat brackets(bought from Automotion before I knew better). The car is a 1969 with 1979 930 sport seats (non power)

Unhappy

Bobby, there seems to be something very wrong with your dimensions!

The 49.5cm width seems to assume that the adapters replace the removable outside stock early seat rail. If you do this, there are two big problems:

1) The centerline of the seat will move ~2 cm towards the outside. Since the centerline of the seat is already slightly outside the center of the steering wheel, this is bad.

2) The outside of the seat will also be lower in height than the inside by another cm, which is the thickness of the removable rail you're discarding.

If you're replacing the removable outside rail completely, shouldn't the outside adapter be both wider and thicker than the inside adapter to keep the seat centered and level?

The alternative would be to keep the stock outside rail and bolt the adapter to it. In that case, the adapters would each be about 2 cm narrower as the actual width of the early front seat is more like 45 cm between the mounting holes in the rails.

Here, I slapped together a line drawing to illustrate what I'm talking about.

Ironically I am in the process of pulling the late (77S) seats out of my 70S and replacing them with the factory seats. I have the brackets that you guys need and I would trade them for the removable bracket (door sill side) and hardware that I need to mount my originals in the car. Best bet if you are interested is to call me on my cell phn. (937) 313-0828
Thanks

Mulkiteo, check out www.speedwaremotorsports.com. They are in Redmond, WA. They have the brackets you need with cross supports, which are track-worthy.
