NEWBIE QUESTION: Paint Bubbles
Hi everyone,
I am new here and about to purchase my first 911, a '79 SC. Quick question to you all today which is that there were some small (dime sized) bubbles in the paintwork just above the rocker on the passenger side. Now I know the body is galvanized - paint is original as far as I know - but I did want to get some opinions on whether I should be terrified of this. I'm in Canada and honestly finding a 911 is hard enough, this one is my birth year... it's meant to be! ![]() It will likely be a long project but I plan to swamp out panels, fenders and bumpers for more of an RSR look anyway but I would appreciate any advice on this. I know pictures would be helpful but I didn't take any of that area last night and the car is going through it's PPI and Safety Certs today, hopefully for pickup tomorrow. Thanks in advance. The first of what I am sure will be, many posts from me! ![]() cheers dK |

DK,
Rust IS terrifying and yes the body is galvanized. Two things. Search is your friend on here, there are hundreds of threads with pictures relating to rust. Second: A Pre-Purchase Inspection by someone who knows these cars is Mandatory, a couple of hundred dollars can save you THOUSANDS. A respected paint and body guy will give you an opinion in minutes as well...... Can't stress these things enough. Good hunting! Scott

I guess you mean in the rear door jamb area? That area is prone to rust caused by crap getting caught in front of the rear tire.
Galvanized or not that is the tip of the iceberg. 911s rust from the inside out. You might want to post a picture. As mentioned there are a bunch of threads here showing what is involved to fix this problem. One example 1967 911 Hot Rod Build Part 1: Metal Restoration

Very exciting! Let the PPI and body inspection results guide you - be brutal about what you may be up against with this car. If you can perform a rolling restoration you will at least have some fun as you go. But do be prepared to walk from this car unless your numbers and corresponding fun quotient square up.
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

Thanks everyone! I'll post pics when I can. PPI and safety are underway today so fingers are firmly crossed right now! Will keep you all posted. My sincere hope is to be able to really enjoy the car this summer and then start a full rebuild around October when winter starts to hit Canada! This forum is fantastic - psyched to (hopefully) soon be a contributing part!

Bubbles in that area are likely from kidney bowl rust. Have a look here: Classic Carreras
These cars do an excellent job of hiding issues like what you have described above. |
