Quick tip for MSD Streetfire users
 

I discovered something the other day that I thought I would pass on.

If you ever need to check that the MSD or coil is producing spark, there is a handy way to test it.

This works for the Streetfire and possibly other MSD units. I’m just not familiar with them.

The Streetfire can be set uo to work with either points or magnetic pickup. If you are using it with mag pickup (green & violet wires) there is no need for the white wire (points) so you’re supposed to cap it off.

Instead of capping it, put a connector on it so you can access it. If you ever need to check it, pull the coil wire to the dizzy and rig it so it’s close to the fan strap.

Then connect a temp wire to the white wire connector (as neede) and with the key on (not cranking), just touch the wire to a ground point and remove it. That will cause the MSD to fire.

If the LED comes on, it fired. If you have no spark, coil is bad. If you have an orange spark instead of blue/white you know it’s weak spark.

Just thought it would be a handy quick test you could do on a side of a road somewhere in a pinch. You could keep an extension for the white wire in the glovebox and put a cap on the white wire when not in use.

The red MSD 6-AL units are the same, and in fact, they talk about that in the instruction manual.

Everyone read the instructions before hooking their units up, right??? :D

HA HA. When I was in the computer hardware service business in the old days (1965-80) we had a term for that. RTFM- Read the f***in manual.
