Heater/ Fresh Air Control Part

My 1984 911 Targa was Florida owned and, while some good money was spent on the AC, the heat/heating system was somewhat dismantled. I've sorted out the heat mostly, which is great, but now have a bit too much.

It seems that, with the heat off, the passenger side vents are fine. The drivers side, however, radiate residual heat. The Heat control flappers both (passenger/ driver side) work, and with the levers down, are open. I imagine though, that even with the levers down there's enough warm air moving through the engine and working it's way past the (off) footwell blower.

I believe that I may be missing the part circled below, as my ducting on the drivers side currently runs directly from footwell blower to the defrost vent and left corner dash vent.

Interestingly, the passenger side seems fine, so either that part exists behind the AC box or the driver's side footwell blower is passing air that it shouldn't. Ideas?

The part circled is the distribution box for upper dash vents and defrost vents.
Check that the cables on your heat flappers are adjusted so they close completely, if they’re down it should shut off heat, any slack in the cable could cause one or both to stay open a bit allowing heat to enter cabin.

Here’s a reference to explore the components….

Yes, you need those (control boxes) on both sides...but they are not behind the "AC box". The AC (evaporator) is in the smugglers box unless you have some sort of unusual aftermarket system. It is unlikely that the driver's side is missing but the passenger side works...as the controls (Bowden cables) that operate the passenger side attach to the one on the driver's side. See attached photo of a partially disassembled system. It is a bit simpler than yours because a few years older and no AC...but largely the same. It is easier to see with other stuff out of the way

These are the parts that should be in an SC. This is from an '82:
