Getting a Porsche key cut - difficult?
So, this is odd... I bought a couple of genuine Porsche key blanks for my '86 911. When I took them into a local locksmith to get them cut, I was told "Porsche factory blanks have some kind of metal in them that can break the key cutting machine" and he knew of no local locksmiths that would touch them.
Part number in question is 911-538-903-00-M100. Anyone else run into this problem? JB |

Nope. Anyone should be able to cut them. I had a Porsche key cut and it was real easy. Just go to another locksmith and not Home Depot or Lowes.

Ya I tried home depot first because I was there. They didnt have the right holder for the porsche key. So I went to a locksmith. He also didnt have the right holder but he free handed it. Didnt charge me a thing. The metal thing sounds BS.

Factory keys are steel not brass (which is what most standard keys are made of). As a result, they are hard on the locksmith's machine. That said, any locksmith who does commerical/industrial locks will have no problem with cutting your key. Aftar all, they can cut Medeco keys which are also very hard.

On top of this, I have a 964 ignition and the brass blanks will not work in the ignition, they will open the door though. Your basic lock smith doesn't like cutting the metal type.

There is a respected north east 911 key guy who always shows up at Hershey. He displays the best blanks available as far as I know. I have his card burried some where. It's hard to pass his booth without having at least one copy made. He does mail order.
when I was in LA LA land I stopped into one of those portable shops that they park in a mall area of Santa Monica. This guy even had 911 blanks. I had 6 made for only 2x a house key.

home depot refused to cut mine. I brought it to Lowes, they said they don't have master key for it. I asked if he can do anything about it? He said he can stand there and spend time to try the car key on any of his master key set. Finally he found one but I need to take the risk of ruin the bank key. I was ok, key was ok too. I have been using it. Cost only couple bucks.

I bought the red blank from pelican and it can but cut to operate the doors but not my ignition, local hardware store copied it for my door key and ordered the correct blank for the ignition. He had no problem cutting the blank from pelican though. It is an '83, don't know if they changed, found it odd that a little harware store could still order the blank key for a 83 porsche, without hesitation.

Very unusual for a hardware store to be able to cut a key for an '86. I've had several keys cut for my '86 Porsches (911 and 928) and I always had to go to a locksmith.

I have never had good luck with non-porsche keys.. I think I have had 3-4 cut at various times for the ignition. They never work... now I have 1 key only... I'm watching this thread closely so I don't go keyless some time

The guy that shows up at Hershey ever year is Tony Euganeo. His shop is http://www.lockandkeyid.com/
If by any chance you are flying into Philadelphia he is only 10 minutes from the airport. Rich

When I bought my "86" 911 it came with only one key and that key had the battery and cover missing that works the small light built into it. Went to local shop "Holyoke Lock" and asked if he could make a couple keys for me. Yep and only charged $3.49 a piece and he supplied the blanks. Both keys worked perfect. Went to ebay and purchased the lighted grip for they keys at 24.95 ea and when they arrived I took the origonal apart and replaced the grip with one of the new ones, worked perfect. While I had it apart I took my dremel tool and shaped one of new cut keys the same as the origonal and the lighted grip fit perfect. So now I have 2 keys with the lighted grip and the 3rd flat key I keep in my wallet in case the keys should ever get locked in the car. Can't imagine what kind of key/lock shops you go to but somethings not right as your porsche and mine are same year.

Ace did mine too...no probs and no charge! I wanted the key with the red, rubber, square head (with the large cut-out), which I bought from our host. I brought it to Ace and the guy said "no charge" since I provided the blank.

KEY PROBLEM SOLVED!! OK, I live about 1/2 mile from a Porsche dealer, so I went in with my blanks - they cut them on the spot - FREE. Apparantly, when you buy original Porsche key blanks, cutting is included if you can bring them in. NICE!

I had an alarm key and an ignition key cut at the local hardware. Both didn't work.
"They ruinses it! Hobbitses ..." I really should order a couple more blanks before I loose my set ...
