Replacement key?
 

Hey everyone,

My first 911 arrived today ('79 SC - she's a beaut!) and my first question to you all is how do I get a replacement key? The car came with just one which, as well all know, is a nightmare waiting to happen! So do I need to order this special from somewhere (if so where) or can I just walk into any locksmith and get a new one cut?

Order a key blank from here, or go to dealer. Have a good locksmith cut it, most don’t have correct blank.

And many locksmith's / key retailers dont have the finer wheel to grind them. Order the blank and have the Porsche dealer cut it.

Thanks to you both! 2 x new blanks ordered from Pelican and looks like a nice little drive up to my local dealer can be had as soon as they arrive! Really appreciate it guys! Thanks!!!!

And test hem in both door and ignition, it can be finicky in one or the other. The dealer will likely adjust at no charge. Best

Any locksmith can cut it. They're stainless so some might ***** about the tooling, but anyone can cut it.

I walked in my local Porsche Dealership, showed them my registration and drivers license and they ordered me a new Factory key Directly from Germany! done.

Dealership key cutting abilities vary greatly. I wouldn't bother with the dealer and find an old school locksmith in your town while providing the blank.

As others have said, go to a decent locksmith and get them to cut it. Not Home Depot, but if you have the blanks, the inexperienced kid might do it. A dealer cutting a key? Never happen, I doubt they have that kind of equipment there. They'll likely just refer you to a locksmith anyway.

Again- try the dealership. Porsche Classic department (Germany) has added thousands of NLA parts in recent years- you’d be surprised what you can find. If not, then give your local lock smith a try- it will be cheaper. Avoid home dpot etc. as others have mentioned.

Call the dealer before you go. My local dealer could not cut my key for my 1981 911SC. Another dealer said they also could not cut a key but could get me a replacement key for $140! Took my blanks to a reputable local locksmith and he cut them for like $8 each. I say reputable, because I also tried another locksmith who cut a key that would not work. Wasted a blank.

A good locksmith should be able to do it - I just had some made last week...

Absolutely right, couldn’t agree more. Dealers do not cut keys, unless they have an Ace hardware store attached LOL. But what they can do is order a factory replacement direct from Mother Germany! Cheers-

In my experience the dealer was the best solution and they did not order replacement keys from Germany.

I ordered the proper blanks from our host.

I went to a local locksmith who used one of their own blanks to experiment if they could do it or not - nope, they made a completely butchered attempt but didnt charge me anything. I was glad they didnt chew up one of the blanks I had purchased. I even tried Ace hardware, no go. Fonally, I went to the Porsche dealer in Mpls and they parts guy cut two blanks that I brought in without any complaint and the charge was $10. He also said he cut them conservatively as he didnt want to go too far and to give them a try, should I want them adjusted further he would do it no charge.

Get the proper blanks, try a local locksmith but ask them to do up an attempt first, try the dealership if that doesnt work. As I mentioned earlier, the dealerships with the smaller cutting wheels can still do them. Or simply take in your VIN and registration and they will order a direct replacement from Germany albeit at a higher expence.

If you had the original owners manual, the key codes were put in there when delivered new. My owners manual no longer had that separate attachment. If you pull the ignition, the specific cut code is printed on it, as well as on the door lock. If you have those, its an even easier process to get blanks cut.

I get my keys cut at True Value for free if I bring the blanks.

I have seen red keys and black keys for ' 71 T. is black ign and red door? or do both colors fit all?

Red is the valet key. Opens door and ignition but not glove box and trunk.

Porsches in that era came with a black skeleton key that would open everything, including ignition, and a red valet key that would open door and ignition but not the frunk lock handle (for Targa) and glove box.

What he said... When I bought mine, the previous owner gave me two keys, which were severely worn and a bit sloppy in the ignition. I ordered a new one from the dealer (they need proof of ownership and identity), and used it once to verify. Now it is my master key stored at home, and I had duplicate keys cut for actual driving.
