3.2 heater diagnostics
The heater of my '85 Carrera is not functioning properly, I suspect. The console between the seats (same as SC) seems to work, as I can hear all sorts of servo's running when I adjust it, and some hot air does enter the cabin when I turn it to its hottest position. But only a little, it will not be sufficient in winter. I suspect that the heater blowers are not doing their job.
Is there an easy diagnostic procedure for testing the heater components? Should I be able to hear the blowers running in the footwells? Thanks |

Yes the footwell blowers should sound like a small tornado when running full out. Check your fuses first. If you need to pull a footwell blower to test there is not much to it. 3 screws holding the kick panel on, two hose clamps and one electric plug. Should take less than 5 minutes to pull the blower.

Even if the footwell blowers are not working, you should be able to get a lot of heat from the main blower in the engine compartment. When you pull up one or both of the floor levers, you should be able to hear the engine blower. If not, check the engine blower fuse on the left side of the engine compartment. You can also pull the plug on the back of the blower and run a current to the blower to see if it works. The levers in between the seats activate the engine blower with two thin copper plates. These can easily get bent and cause the blower not to work. It is very easy to pull off (unsrew) the cover and check the operation of the lever activated switch.
Also check the heater hoses from the heat exchnagers, underneath the car. I found both of mine torn, which causes heat leakage and engine fumes to come into the cabin. I have always found the main engine compartment blower to be sufficiently powerful that I never have to use the auxiliary blowers in the footwells. In any case, they make ominous sqeaking sounds if I turn them on.

You need to tell us if you have the "auto" heat..or the two manual levers. I have the auto style which recently went bad on my 85 and which I've fixed. The footwell blowers won't work ( I believe) if the engine mounted blower doesn't run when it should. Next...the footwell blowers might not have a fuse..these were added in later 87 or 88 ( do an update if yours doesn't have one). Most likely, if you heasr "whirring" in the console..the small rod that connects the servo motor to the lever probably has the end-ball sockets broken. There is an updated part number ( $.98 ! ) that fixes this. Do a search on my name and John Walker's...he clued me in on the revised parts numbers.
