Alternator rebuild shop recommendations or purchase rebuild
 

Hey everyone.

I have a 1971 with a 1975 2.7 CIS engine.. I am working on the wiring harness and a few other problems but was wondering if anyone had a shop recommendation to rebuild my 71 alternator or should I just purchase a 75 or later alternator? There was also talk to upgrade to an external voltage regulator. What are the benefits?

The older alternators tend to be longer lived than the newer ones. That might be because newer cars have a higher electrical demand. At any rate getting the '71 rebuilt is a good option. Unless you have air conditioning, then an upgrade may be in order.

All of the cars up to the Carreras had external regulators. You can get solid state replacements which is probably the way to go.

Great. I googled an alternator shop specializing in Porsche and could not find one. Does anyone have a recommended shop?

Virtually any good shop specializing in alternators and starters could
rebuild your alternator. I've had Porsche alternators rebuilt by several good shops. Rebuilt/reconditioned alternators in the market place are at best a crapshoot, there are many POOR commercial rebuilders out there, including Bosch! A lot of them just replace a few components to save money, not a complete remanufacture like a good local shop will usually do, plus if you have a problem you can address it locally. Best to rebuild your known good core. Just my experience.

Yes, make sure you get the regulator that matches the brand of alternator you have.

As mentioned any shop that can rebuild an alternator can do the 911s. The Motorolas found in the old 911s were quite common at the time and various versions were used in many cars.
