Alternator upgrade
So I had this great idea about putting a 84-89 Carrera alternator in my ‘71 911.
For the upcoming electric a/c install. Anyway without doing my homework I ordered an ‘88 alternator and it’s a ton bigger than the earlier one. So what’s next? Matching the fan housing? Or get a Carrera fan and housing? Longer bolts would not work as the fan will not sit inside the housing. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1527112921.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1527112957.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1527112978.jpg |
Our 180A units are now available. Direct fit for your '71.

Well I am trying to prepare for your a/c in my car. I did see earlier that you recommend a 90amp alternator or better. My car is basic and will not have even a radio so that is why I figured a 90amp would be enough.
Anyway is your alternator the same dimension as a '71 unit? Mine is obviously not original as it is a Valeo. It had to have spacers on the back of it into order for the fan to fit properly. I'm thinking that the 69-73 and 74-83 and 84-89 all had different size housings. Just from looking at pictures on line it looks like where the alternator bolts to the housing on the later models it is a lot thinner. I don't mind buying the proper alternator needed for your a/c. But will I end up in the same boat as I am with the Carrera unit? |
There is 3 different back spacing on the fan housings.
The original housings have approximately 24 mm of thickness. The 75 to 83 including the smaller SCs have a back space of 19 mm The Carrera uses a housing that has approximately 6 mm thickness. The Carrera has a tenancy to crack from tension and age. Bruce |
Our new alternator has the correct back spacing for an early housing so is direct fit for a '71 housing.
Mid year / SC and late 3.2 offsets are catered for using spacers. |

Great info here. Bump to the Top. Len :) |
As a follow up. I ended up buying the alternator from out friends in England. Timmy2 made me a new engine harness. Once installed I never looked back. No issues whatsoever.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1560094489.jpg
