Chrome window frames
 

I have a pretty 1986 911 coupe black/black that I think would look better with old-style chrome window frames. My thought is to have the current driver / passenger side frames chrome plated. Perhaps it would be more efficient to buy older frames that were chromed from the get-go.
Has anyone out there been down this road? Hoping for some guidance on this potential project.

I think they were anodized aluminum. Chrome is not going to look quite right, though you are putting it on a Carrera, so it doesn't have to be in the original style. All purist rules are out at that point.

I'm a fan of doing whatever you like so I say go for it. Removing it without bending it is possible but take it slow.

I believe Sean at Tru6 can 'restore' your black trim to the popper anodized aluminum finish if you do want to go that route. You can also purchase a new set of front and back trim though it's somewhat pricey.

Careful now, if you go bright trim, you might fall down the slippery slope of a backdate. :-)

You'd have to change all the trim for it to look right. The trim is also polished aluminum not chrome plated. But yeah as 75 911 says its a slippery slope and one of the main differentiators between the Longhoods and later cars. The early frames are hard to find and super expensive so if you decided to go this route you would be better off having your existing ones polished. Its one of those details that lots of people dont do when backdating due to the time, effort and cost. I'm afraid if you had polished trim on a mid-year car people would think it was an early car that someone updated. :eek::eek::eek:

Yes the trim on the early '70s COUPEs were aluminum bright coated and anodized.

Be careful if you have yours re-done in the shiny finish as many plating shops can't truly reproduce the original look.

There are some on this forum that have simply stripped and polished their trim.

The bottom line is what are you trying to accomplish? A back date? or? If you look at an early '70s car ALL the trim is shiny aluminum or chrome. So if you just do the windows, how will it look, without doing the door handles or headlight rings or windshield trim or the turn signal lenses or?

BTW, some of the older cars with wind wings had actual chrome trim around the windows.

The red car and orange car both have chrome on the door and rear quarter trim with bright anodized front and rear windshield trim, the blue car is polished aluminum. I do not like the bright dip anodize as much as the chrome but it is a personal preference

I'm considering doing the same thing to my 1985, which is white. It will go well with my budget RSR wheels project.
