Eric,I have shipped and received seats in the past and 1 common item is that they are folded forward, this helps keep the box as small as possible. Also it makes sense to put 2 or 3 layers of cardboard in the bottom of the box, this helps insure that the bottom of the box will hold up to being thrown around in shipping.Other than that use what ever packing material is available-peanuts,bubble wrap, wadded up newspaper etc. to pack the seats as tightly as possible, hope this helps.

Also try completely reclined. Then hit your local bike shop for cardboard boxes. The reclined seat might just drop right in. Stuff like this I usually double box so get a bunch extra. The box will also get turned any which way in shipping so prepare all sides as if they were the bottom. You may also want to ask your shipping place what size is considered "oversize" as they may not take it or at least they'll charge a ton.

I'd recommend Fedex Ground as the shipping source - they're usually real good at larger, bulkier items, particularly compared to the US Postal Service. And you can drop the package off at a ton of Fedex offices.

Measure the box, put it on a scale and then go to their website - you'll have a real clear idea as to what the cost will be beforehand.

The trick in packing is to make it as tight as possible. Put the seats in large (42 gallon) trashbags, then pack as many 'peanuts' or newsprint or whatever in there. You don't want them to move around. Make sure you mark "UP" (for whatever it is worth), and tape the box very tightly. Remember, this thing is going down conveyer belts, and will drop at minimum a foot or two.

When I shipped a pair of seats, I removed the seat backs and shipped the backs in one box and the bottoms in one box. I had to make a custom box for the seat backs but it worked out well. When I shipped a single, I folded the seat back forward as suggested above. Make sure you find out the total inches your shipping company will accept. I used UPS and if I remember correctly, they only take up to around 130 total inches. I just made it with my box. It was around $30 for the single, power seat.

Check the Dimensional Weight Limits for UPS and Fedex Ground before you start packing. Fedex will take a larger box than UPS will...I have not been able to ship seats via UPS since the boxes exceeded the DIM restrictions. I have been able to just sneak in under the Fedex max DIM size. I go to Uhaul and get double think wardrobe or glass packing boxes, they work great for the seats.
