Which DYI seat upholstery kit is best?
I've contacted most of the major players (that I am aware of) for price quotes. So far they range from $900-$1500 for seat covers for standard seats in German vinyl with pepita (houndstooth) inserts for my 1971 911T Targa. The pricing for seat foam, and seat back reinforcement kits seems to run an additional $500-$1000. Anyone have good or bad experiences to share? Is one kit better made, easier to install, or more correct/authentic than the others? I've redone 914 seats & interior in the past using kits from one of the major vendors and am confident I can install the 911 kits successfully. That said, I would like to make sure the time and money is well spent. All feedback welcomed.

Classic 9 leather
After reading a lot of reviews, I went with Classic 9. They provided a set of perforated German leather, champagne covers for a pair of sport seats from an 84 944.
Because of the high side bolsters, I took their advice to have them do "French" seams, rather than the standard welt bead. I had a local college guy, with a lot of upholstery experience, install the covers. I paid $1750 for the set of covers and $350 for the recovering, cores, $1000. They fit beautifully and the quality looks to excellent. Sorry, no photos, they are wrapped, on a high shelf in the garage, while the restomod is proceeding. I would do it again, Chris |

One thing to consider with early comfort seats is to remove some of the bottom cushion bounce. You roll up foam cylinders and push them into bottom spring cavities. Rob

Hi Hi_Fi_Guy- Huge fan of Lakewell's kit. Mr. Van der Meer does include DIY instructions, but I opted for a local pro (recommended by the Porsche dealer) for the install. It's been over 4 years and really pleased. It appears he does offer the Pepita inserts as a standard option for his '71 kit.

I'm looking at the same thing, and found that Classic 9 does not list anything for long hoods, only '74+ tombstone seats.
