CV joint/bolt torque advice
Hi all,
I read a lot in the archives on CVs and axles (coming loose!) and could use some advice: I've got an 82SC but with the bigger Carrera axles. Should I check the torque on the CV's bolts? What should the torque value be on these later axles? TIA! Edward |

i think its like 36 ftlbs or something. i found it impossible to get a torgue wrench on them so i went by feel. i used new lock washers and they did loosen about 500 miles after the reinstall. i torqued them again and have checked a couple times since and they have stayed good. some recommend using a schnoor (sp?) washer.

Absolutely use the washer. See the current thread for more info on this.

I was able to get a torque wrench on them using an allen head socket.
There was a thread just the other day about torque values and how the Bentley manual had them listed wrong, IIRC. Yeah, this one ![]() Axel fell off -Chris

36 may be a bit high......if it's the 8mm bolts, I believe they should be torqued at 30 or 32 lbs.

Thanks, all, for the feedback ...and thanks, Chris, for that link!
Seems to be a lot of "I think it is..." so the definitive answer is 60lbs for the later (thicker G50) axles. ...Will go and check those bolts. BTW, do these things "really" get loose as often as I've read here? And should I check the torque on a regular basis? This seems odd considering other things on the car don't just fall off at regular intervals? Nor have I ever heard of a regular "re-torquing regimen." Edward

re-torque at least once a few hundred miles after you install
my guess is that improper installation is causing the looseness don't get grease on the threads when installing use the Schnorr washers and the half moon plates examine the threads and heads (esp. internal "corners") of the Allen bolts & replace if damaged ... just off the top of my head -- be sure to read the many threads on this topic

Thanks for the reply, Randy. I appreciate it!
I didn't "install" anything. My SC (with the G50 axles by the PO) is less than one year new to me, and I was just concerned after reading all those threads about them coming loose. But I did have one of the axles replaced by a (good) local shop about 1K miles ago. Edward

They do come loose, and at inopportune times. Watch out for the torque specs in 101 projects, do a search.

Yes, DO NOT TORQUE AT 60 UNLESS YOU HAVE THE LARGER 10MM SCREWS. I believe only the later turbos had those. The 101 projects has the wrong torque, which they say is 60 for the 8mm, but it's wrong. Ask me how I know. I told them after I broke 2 bolts, and they said after that to torque at 30. By the way, I did not use any washers, but I did torque properly and used brand new bolts without issue. This was last summer, and I've had 4 days at the track, no problem.....(knock on wood!).
Regards,

I'd check the torque. IF they are even a bit loose; torque again in 1k more miles.
