Andrew, thanks for the scan of the famous #23.

Now, another question about this 917k...

I was looking closely at my new AutoArt model, and noticed 3 small, silver, protrusions from the right flank.

I checked a picture of #23 from the Rennsport Reunion, and sure enough, these little do-dads show in that photo, just as they do on the model.

(Strangely, they don't appear on the photo Andy has scanned,or the #35 "Hippy" parked next to #23 at the Reunion, but....)
Does anyone know what purpose these fittings serve?

I'm thinking some sort of vent for fuel or oil tanks....917 experts??

Here's a scan from Panorama that is not so shady. You can see 2 of the "mystery bits" by the right rear number roundel, and 1 just outside the right side door.

Richard Attwood's 917 is not the real LeMans winner. It is a 917 that was owned by, none other than, Solar Productions (Steve McQueen's movie production company). The car was once owned by Brian Redman and he sold it to Attwood. It is believed that the car never actually raced.

More good info.
This might explain why the "mystery bits" are absent from the Attwood car. Not the *real* thing.

BTW, Curt, I had a look at your model car website. Simply astonishing!

Those are little running lights so the car numbers can be seen at night.

C'mon dude give us a tough question about 917's.

Doug,

I believe the little metal devices you are seeing are small lights once required under LeMans rules. They illuminate the roundels at night for scoring purposes.

Also, thanks for the comments on my diecast website. It's a lot of fun and I've actually got some collector-friends who do most of the writing these days. We reached our 200,000th hit last week! Not bad for a private collector site.

I guess the real question is where is the real LeManns winner , where was it for years and who owns it now?

As discussed yesterday, the real LeMans winner was shown at Rennsport this year. It's owned by Dr. Palmaz. It appears he purchased it from a Japanese collector.

Yes! We have a winner!!

It's just that I don't have a prize to award you, Curt & Orb, but excellent trivia answering all the same. (Those AutoArt models are pretty detailed, eh?)

AutoArt models are very nice! They are even beginning to produce some proper scale models (that would be 1:43, of course!) -- Curt

"Those are little running lights so the car numbers can be seen at night. "

But did you know those are licence plate lights from a BMW 2002. The factory used those light on many of their endurance cars. I am ordering 3 for my 914/6GT project.

BMW lights: now THAT'S some real trivia!

Doug: Wait until your collection reaches 600-700, you'll either have to build an addition onto your house or switch to 1:43 ....

During the Sunday Concours at Rennsport this summer I was videotaping the #23 car when a very friendly person walked over to me and started talking about the car. Turns out it was the owner, Dr. Palmaz, and he proceeded to tell me the story of how he purchased the car after it was authenticated and guaranteed by Symobolic.

It was a great story to hear firsthand and it made for wonderful commentary as I had the videotape running the entire time.

When I asked him what he intended to do with the car he replied "own it and enjoy it forever." Obviously this should be the motto of every Porsche owner!

That's what always strikes me first about these too. You can really get a sense of it in the movie LeMans when they are passing 911's or Corvettes - the top of the 917 is at window sill height!! It's basically a 12-cylinder motor with a lawn chair strapped to the front of it. -- Curt

[Give me an excuse to cap a frame from the movie.]

Here's the scene just before Delaney crashes, he's avoiding a slower moving 911 in front of him as he's distracted by the Ferrari 512 crash. You know it - you love it.
