Points Elimination/Replacement

I certainly could use some help with this one. I am TIRED of POINTS! I would like to install the "Ignitor" system that eliminates points and would like to ask the reading audience if anyone has installed this system.
If so, how difficult is it? Must the distributor be removed? Will the replacement last? and.................does it improve performance and really provide more reliability? Thank you for your input.

Hi Bob,

I have a 73"S" and my feelings were very much like yours about the points. With some great help and patience from people on this board I hooked the Pertronix system up (took all of 15 minutes) to find out that the unit was bad.

It went back for verification and it was, in fact, DOA. This took well over a month to rectify! I finally got the second unit in and installed it. It ran very roughly for about 5 minutes and died. I immediately re-installed my points and have been fine ever since.

I would still like to get away from the points in my car, but the Pertronix install... as simple as it is, just does not appear to be reliable. I have a Crane/Alison pointless ignition that is just sitting around. I might give that a shot next.

Hope this helps...

Marc

BTW... some of the guys love the Pertronix setup. Maybe I just got two lemons!

I have had Petronix fail out of the box, my last two rides use the Crane Allison HI6S Ignitor and XR3000 pointless ignition.

Crane XR700 on my Bosch-equipped '69 911 "rs" for the last 15,000 miles with no problems. I'm surprised to hear about troubles with Pertronix as many Porsche owners use this over the Crane.

I have a pertronix unit in my distributor. I didn't install it. I bought the car several years ago and it has performed very well. I have heard of several stories about the pertronix unit being DOA.

I will look into the Allison unit on my next distributor. I think that there are other units out there that you could do the conversion with also. I have looked a the MSD conversion stuff but don't know how difficult it would be to use.

I have also looked at modifying a replacement MSD billet distributor for perhaps a V-6 or straight 6. I don't think it would be as much work as modifying the insides of a stock bosch distributor. It would be probably made better also.

Good luck,
David Duffield

I installed the Pertronix in my 73S, took about 10 minutes to install, adjusted it once and forgot about it. No problems whatsoever. I have used the Crane in the past, more adjustment required but worked just as well.
