Engine serial number mystery
 

I am looking at a car that has a 911/57 engine, but the serial number on the engine doesn’t make any sense to me.

The serial number is 5725080

Can anyone shed any light on this

from 1969 the 911 engine serial begins with 6; not likely the factory would make that mistake. The stars that bracket the serial are also missing. So, very likely the number was faked for some, not so honest, reason. Run away.

Type number 911/57 decodes to a 1972 MY Euro T engine. Agree with djpateman that the serial number is likely faked--look closely at the 7, it looks to be badly stamped, and, again, no stars.

The type number appears to be genuine, putting the engine in the 1972 vintage so the third number of the serial number, 2, could be correct.

Stay away.

Are the VINs on the vehicle consistent in the multiple locations - and appear accurate?

Vins are good. Engine is not correct to the car, trying to figure out what the engine is.

Looks like someone filled/faked/restamped the first 2 numbers in order to avoid detection by anyone looking for a stolen engine #6225080

Just a guess.
