rear end lift
 
I have an 85 911 Targa and would like to know if I can lift the rear end of the car with a block of wood on a floor jack from the bottom of the engine pictured below.

I would do this to simply move the rear end a few feet in the garage.

The motor and transmission mounts are new.

Here you go, just place jack here and use a several rags or thin phone book. Just center at the split and raise slowly and lower slowly.

Same comment, yes. I don't do this frequently but when you want the back up to address the bumper or just rear wheels and have the space behind for the long floor jack required this works well. A bit nerve wracking so go slowly.

Flo,

That is a tow hook. I would not use that as a jacking point.

I think you jack at the black round point which attaches directly to the engine mount and support bar. No jacking on the red towing part.

It may be the angle of your photo, but is your sump pump plate properly positioned? looks like the plug might not be oriented correctly.

Frankly, there are many decent jack points on a 911.

Why would you want to lift your car using the most expensive to repair component in your car?

There are very few for lifting the rear that is safe and stable and accessible.

I resisted this method for quite some time but after buying a new jack and double checking Wayne's book I gave it a try. I am now a believer.

I don't like this way.
for old engine versions with a fule pump sump plate, I'd highly recommend to use some wood or similar in strengh to absolutely avoid denting the plate!
or at least point the jack more aft to avoid the plate at all!

I have been using the engine case lift of the the car since 1980`s .My teacher ex Zuffenhausen mechanic told me that is fine.If you have a rubber pad on your jack there is no harm whatsoever done to your engine case or strainer plate.Some people do not like it as i can see above , but most 911 mechanic use this method all the time...

Flojo as said above your strainer plate is installed wrongly the drain plug has to be on left side....

Hockey puck on the jack saddle makes a good pad for lifting by the engine case. Actually makes a good saddle pad, period.

If he still has the old style sump screen then the drain plug can be oriented like he has it. You only need to orient it to the left when you upgrade to the new style screen. I know because I made this mod to my car about 20 years ago.
