Need help from the community on Paint...
Hi all. As you may have heard, we recently recovered my stolen 914-6 conversion! See more details here: Wayne's 914-6 Conversion -> STOLEN!!!
Not really a 911, of course, but paint is paint, and I wanted to get the 911 community's opinion here? The car was in a state of "waiting for paint", and I just hadn't gotten around to messing with it yet. Now that I have more time, and we've recovered it, I wanted to make sure I kept the momentum up and got this thing into paint real soon. I also didn't have a good idea of what I wanted it to look like, but I saw an awesome looking 914-6 that had been built into a GT car in the 1970s - this car came up for auction this past year. Here's a photo: ![]() So, in a nutshell, we're looking to replicate this look in my car. The car was originally light blue, but then it was painted black a long time before I bought it. I really want this car to be a driver and not to have a really expensive paint job that I'm constantly going to work about "rock chipping", so I've decided to keep the car two-tone in color in a hope to reduce the cost of a full repaint - Blue Metallic on the outside and keep the black on the inside. I've seen other cars with this, and they look perfectly fine. Being the engineer that I am, I've created a lengthy RFP (Request For Proposal) for the job with arrows and photos of what I would like done. If you guys have a moment, I would appreciate some feedback, and some input, in case I forgot something. Here's a link to the PDF: https://www.dropbox.com/s/prk1z4lqxoreb93/Porsche%20914%20Request%20for%20Proposal.pdf?dl=0 Thanks, Wayne

I’m not sure it might not just be easier for the body shop to paint behind the bumpers rather than masking the area. Since there’s no real work other than a bit of scuffing of the surface, the difference in cost would probably be minimal. I’d be much more concerned about your time frame for a good shop as quality takes time.

3 months is quick! depends on the shop, but that's fast.
OT, can anyone tell if the rear wheels on the GT are 8's or 9's? i'm running 16's on my GT now and am interested in going to 15's with the TB15's. the 23/62R15 would need to run on a 9, no? good luck wayne, stoked you got yer car back!...

The car is already stripped down and paint-ready. We would only be looking to paint the outside surfaces. I think everyone is assuming a full rotisserie paint job, which is the opposite of what I'm looking for here. This is meant to be a good looking driver - I don't want to have to worry about rock chips or bird poop - I just want to enjoy the car!
Thx, Wayne

For the wheels question, I use Armando Serrano's website here: 914-6 GT's Photo Galleries at pbase.com

Unless you are going to make it a Team car (#63 or #65), why copy a car! I like unique! But that is a nice looking car!
Searching for what will make each of us happy is not easy! I start thinking the Nations Racing Colors or a liviery for a particular set of drivers! I really like the Ford Daytona/Cobra Guardsman blue, but then I like a red yellow black German flag offset German stripe traveling over the car or a whole bunch of them crisscrossing all over the car! I think of like an Interscope black and sinister 914 ala Danny ! And Wild is in, as some of my favorites lately left me thinking long after the encounter! The Singer Mulholland car jumps to mind as the last! I saw a car painted like the Arizona Ice Green Tea can the other day, with the pink Rosebuds. I think of like the white with black stripe art car BMW CSL. For 914s, my favorite is that military green drab and Matt black flared winged car, that had a thread here a while back! I saw a car painted like a WWII ME-109 fighter! But then I would love to do a car with Bomber type pin-up girls all over it or Penthouse and Playboy sponsored cars years ago, so like attractive pit gals! Many people have since suggested that I think about wrapping the car, since the paint will only be on the outside, very similar to what I have spec'ed out here. In the old days, the wraps were only "okay", but I hear these days they are very, very good?

I instantly thought back on the old 1970 Redlines special edition Hot Wheels, special club purchase Chrome Boss Hoss Mustang and the Chrome Heavy Chevy Camaro, but with Matt Black bumpers! These wraps in these Metallic foils are something else, a whole new dimension! But it would have to be very Vintage Racer looking with the RSR rims, some LeMans Roundel illumination lights, etc The roof stays black too! Those old Hot Wheels specials really wowed us kids when they came out! Since Chrome maybe a bit much, a real titanium metal wrap (more gray/silver metal look)! For the hell of it! I just punched up images of Matt Titanium Chrome Wrapped cars! I could see that looking cool on a full race looking 914, with the RSR rims, Matt black roof and bumpers, rally lights wrapped too!

I'm into non-metalic paints now days. And I think it's called single stage, by that I mean no clear coat.
My favorite color is that avocado color that a few of the new cars are coming out with. Toyota has a particually nice one. Yellow with a touch of green in it. I'd love to have my 911 in that color. |

Definitely look at single-stage paint vs. base+clear...the color on a single-stage job is "at the surface" and shows differently. Only works for non-metallic.
Wraps are getting popular but with all the body work you need (flares, dents, etc.) you would not benefit. Wraps work great on freshly painted, smooth cars but imperfections show through. I'd avoid. An expert may know differently. I agree that you're not saving much by not painting behind the bumpers. However I don't see a reason to paint them blue either...so probably best to avoid a slippery slope risk on that. Are you putting this out yet for body shops to quote? If so I have a few here in TX you might consider.

I'm beginning to come to the realization - when I parked the car about 8 years ago because I didn't want to deal with body shops and painting it, I'm understanding that my concerns and issues from back then were well founded. Everyone is all over the map, and prices seem insane to have a car painted. It seems to range from $800 at Maaco, to $15,000, with very little in-between. Nearly impossible to make an informed decision. And that's even from the people who will give a ballpark quote on it. Some say, "oh it will be somewhere between $10K and $20K and I can't even start on it until 2019." Yep, now I remember why I didn't get it painted eight years ago.

I am a single stage convert, after doing some wild A$$ show quality paint jobs in Pearls, Candy's, Metal Flakes, etc.. A metallic is really easy to lay down! When you get into more opaque colors (whites, yellows, medium or light reds, etc..), those get harder. Or dark colors like blacks, etc..
I bought two guns, a cheaper $150 gun for my primer and a near $450 gun for the finish coats. I have over 50 years of experience with airbrushes, and 30 with painting the real ones, and I have did the last bunch in the garage, in the morning, no wind, cleaning the garage thoroughly, with these single staged paints (catalyst mixed). I am thoroughly comfortable with driving them anytime, and I don't even worry any longer when they get dinged or dented, or scratched. The cars get compliments, and I am not broke! |

Kind of Afrika Corps!!! I like the Military looking colors a lot, but I am now seeing the major Car manufacturers doing more of those. The best picked colors of any Manufacturer currently, is by Mini! They have a real throw back eye with colors that are very good looking. Off white, like the old Porsche race white, but modern. The orange, is very McLaren in tone, etc. etc. etc. I found out that my family heritage was from the State of Baden, so I am really liking the flag! That is where the Porsche factory is also, near the Black Forest, and east of the Rhine. Boring!!!!! ![]() Last edited by TCracingCA; 05-22-2018 at 12:52 PM.. |

While that thought crossed my mind for a 1/2 of a second, I do realize that a) this is a messy and time-consuming process, and b) I think it does probably take years of working in this trade in order to get a "feel" for paint and the techniques involved. I tried painting my first 356 dashboard about 25 years ago and I pretty much screwed that up big time. After that (and a few dozen fried brain cells), I realized that it wasn't really something that I the skills to do at a high level.
