1986 911 Carrera seats in a 1981 911 SC Targa
Dear All
Since one week, I am an owner of a 1981 911 SC Targa. I am already obsessed and have become completely unproductive in all other things in my life, spending hours just standing there looking at it, driving it and searching for things on the internet about it. Photo attached. Btw the red Citroen 2CV in the background is mine also. I have searched threads for a response to the following very specific question and have not found a response that I am confident completely answers the question. The seats on my car are in pretty bad shape. I have found two seats from a 1986 911 Carrera that are in excellent condition and before I fork out the money for them, want to be sure if there is any reason why I would not or could not use them in my car. Thanks for your thoughts. ![]() |

They will bolt right in and work perfectly. If they are electric and your current seats are not, you will have to route power to them, but that's a piece of cake. I have '86 944 seats in my '83 SC now (bolt right in) and have a like new pair of 993 seats ready to go in and replace those (more modern and in like-new condition). There is great interchangeability with seats in 911 up to and including the 993. Starting with the 996 (1996 onwards) things changed and they were no longer compatible with the older car like ours.

Hmmmm.........if an ‘81 SC has the same rail base as a ‘78, then ’86 electric sport seats do not fit directly. You will have to drill new holes and if you decide to use the seatbelt receptacles attached to the seats (as opposed to the receptacle base on the tunnel), you should reinforce the rail bases closest to the tunnel. Also, you will sit approximately 2.5 cm higher-may be an issue if you are tall.

I continued to use the floor mounted seat belt receptacles, and removed the ones that came mounted on the '86 944 seats.

You need adapters to put 74 and later seats into an early car. Rob

Wasn't there one year of 3.2s that had a different seat mount?
