Question grinding reverse & 1st gear upon cold start

Upon cold start up and going into reverse gear, I am grinding. I count 5 seconds before shifting. Clutch seems to not disingage during this time. After warmed up, not problem. No clutch slip or shudder when warm. Possible oil on disc from leaking rear main oil seal? or tranny problem? I also have to ease into 1st gear when warm or grinding occurs. 81'SC

I have a similar problem with mine. As was explained to me, 915 gearbox does not have synchos in either 1st or reverse. I find that upon cold start up, if I shift into 1st & 2nd and then into reverse, no grinding.
Also, check to see when your last transmission fluid change was. I changed mine (swepco) and problem improved markedly.

There is a syncro on first, but it dosn't work very well. This also is migrated be the effect of having to eather reverse rotation of the input shaft, or having the largest diference on gear ratio in the transmission.

they work fine when they're in good condition.
high cold idle makes reverse harder to engage quietly. you could try adjusting the clutch a bit tighter.

I have the same problem sometimes, so I shift into 2nd or 3rd before I try reverse or 1st again. It usually works.

Keep the rpm's up when cold shifting it helps.

Are you CERTAIN that your clutch is adjusted properly with 15-20 mm of freeplay?

Grinding in reverse is usually indicative of a maladjusted clutch.

Have you tried if it helps holding the clutch down while starting the engine?

My dad's Volvo grinds when selecting reverse just after starting the engine without pressing the clutch down. If he holds the clutch down while starting the engine reverse can be selected without problems...?
