How to get the squirt cage off the front evaporator motor. Help.
I am at a loss. I got the unit out. I got the set screw out.. I soaked it in penetrating oil for 4 days, I hit it, smashed it, torched it... NOTHING.
Debating grinding off the motor as it’s trashed. I bought a motor of an Indy here that’s new. Bought it would be simple. I may have messed up my cage too as the bottom bent through. Should have ordered the Griffith one with the fan but thought I could salvage it.. ![]() ![]()

I went through this. I could not salvage it. I tried heat, liquid wrench, etc. I tried hitting the motor shaft with a hammer and punch. Eventually I ripped the bottom of the fan cage out doing that, and it was all over. Returned the new motor without cage to Pelican and bought one with cage from Griffiths.

I don’t see just the cages. Not sure my Indy will take it back.. I wonder if I can just get the cage.

If you are talking about the evaporator blower motor and fan (in the evaporator housing that is located in the smuggler's box), and this is for your 1986, then the part number for just the fan is 90157390601.
The reason why I mention "if" is because your thread title says "front evaporator", and there is only one evaporator in the car, so maybe you are calling the nose condenser the "front evaporator". If so, let me know and I will look that part number up as well. |

Naturally, those bisches at Porsche Classic don't have separate parts for the front condenser blower assembly - only the whole thing is listed (fan, motor and housing altogether) and the cost is just under $1000.00 (fackin' Porsche tax at its finest

Yup it’s insane, for the Beher housing. Mines fine. I just need the cage or return the motor and order Griffith on here.

If you were to cut the shaft off with a small cutting wheel (as close to the motor as possible), then you might be able to position the fan on top of a slightly open vice and then strike the other end of the saft with a hammer and punch and drive it out. The problem though is it looks like your fan has torn away some at the hub, so that would have to be positioned as true as possible and when welded, if you were able to remove the remainder of the shaft.

Exactly, or else it will wobble.

Try one of the used parts suppliers. DC Auto, Einmalig, etc. if you cannot return the motor to the indy and buy one of Charlie Griffith's complete units. I bought an entire assembly with a fried motor from Einmalig and slipped the fan on to a Griff motor.
Now, right as rain.

Well, now that you have successfully destroyed it, why not figure out what you should have done forensically so that the rest of us might learn what not to do?

There’s no “ should have done on this other than replace” The cage hub is pressed into the cage holder. In theory the pinion or set screw holds it on with a little threat locker. The irony is that The set screw came out easily. BUT.. 36 years of spinning, heat, oxidation has fused the hub to the motor. Plus it’s two different metals so penetrating oil did nothing. There’s no way to apply the kind of force needed to a 1mm piece of aluminum that is the cage floor. It’s gonna break. Now that it did, that when I tried to get the hub off. And Nothing worked. 5 min on a torch and just for kicks, smashed it with a Mallet.. nothing. So ya, it’s pooched. Replace.

When I replaced mine, I had to cut through the motor shaft, removed the set screw, then placed the squirrel cage over slightly opened vise so I could use a punch to drive the shaft out. Since the motor is already trashed, just cut the shaft.
