Dip, blast or heat gun strip
Hi,
Regarding bare metal restoration options. I would appreciate any recommendations and thoughts on chemical dipping, media/sand blasting or stripping with paint stripper/a heat gun. The paint team are suggesting a checmical dip as there is a lot of ‘tar’ painted on the underside of the car. I have heard stories about chemicals getting stuck inside panels and causing issues down the track. I am replacing inner and outer sills so that might reduce the potential trap areas..... Thanks! |

I would dip it..
You must dip it, dip it good.... oops... '80's songs I've had experience with all three methods you suggested.. Heat gun sand putty knife.. Yea if you have years to finish.. Sandblasting...You will be getting grit out of nooks and crannies for years.. just fantastic when you hit a bump on track at speed and get a blast of grit that finds it way into your helmet.... We have used Redi Strip in Allentown, Pa a few time to bring a tub back to raw.. no paint or undercoating left after the process....not sure if they are still open... They prep the tub in one solution. then strip the tub in another solution... sits in the chemicals for a few days.. then a few days in a neutralizer bath.. When we got the pictured tub back it went strait to powdercoating... where we asked it to be baked at once to dry the tub, then coated , then baked again... blank canvas... Back from Powder coating ![]()

Dry ice makes removing the tar a breeze. Look it up on youtube. It is pretty easy and cheap.

Thanks.
Photos look great!!! Anybody had any of the chemical seeping issues over time? Maybe the chemicals used today are less of an issue than those used in the past? |

I am at the same point. got my 78 SC/930 conversion stripped to the tub. not only to change color, but it does need a full paint. there are several places where the paint has cracked badly. and doing a sunroof delete.
how much to strip? and WOW PC the whole car? I have a local friend who recently built a huge oven for his PC shop. need to see if it can accommodate a tub. I have seen him PC full tube chassis for dune buggy and rock crawlers. your car appears to be a full race project, so PC may make sense. but I am pretty sure I'll stick with a high quality paint job. ![]() the guy who originally built this conversion had it blasted. during my dismantle, have found a lot of grit hiding behind and under stuff.

Keep in mind that if you dip the car you will have to cut open the rockers to replace the paper-based heater tubes that run inside. Not an issue if your rockers are rusted, but a lot of work if they aren't.

Sills are already off,so no issue there. Are there any other areas that chemical residue could get stuck?
