1974 911 Hot Rod Build

Hi, for as long as I can remember, I've always wanted a 911. A couple of weeks ago I went to see a '74. She needed work, but looked to be in good shape and the price was right so I pulled the trigger and brought her home.

The story is the car's been sitting for about 20 years in a storage building. New battery, fresh gas, and some Mystery oil down the cylinders and she started right up.

The plan is to build a light weight hot rod and drive the crap out of it.

The car already has some goodies, Weber carbureted '79 3.0 with upgraded chain tentioners, SC oil cooler, I'm finding more about it I dig into it.

So I'd like to tackle the fuel system first. The fuel tank was surprisingly clean, but there are some leaks by the fuel filter and the car still has the nylon fuel lines that need to be replaced.

The fuel pump is a 0580254985, running into a Bosch 0.450.905.016 fuel filter, running into what seems to be a splitter of some kind.

I can't find any info on this thing. It's and Earls part, but no part number or markings that help ID it.

Anyone have any info on this? I thought it might have been a pressure regulator, but there no screws or any signs that it can be adjusted in any way.

Looks to be a distribution block with a gauge, using generic Aeroquip style fittings. Summit or Jegs would have replacement parts.

Shoooo32, thats what I figured.

I can't find a fuel pressure regulator anywhere on this thing. Not under the front belly pan by the rack, not by the fuel pump in the rear, and not in the engine bay. I've traced the fuel lines front to back, no sign of a FPR.

I'm having a hard time believing they ran the car with a CIS pump, carbs, and no FPR.

You should replace it with the PMO pressure regulator.

What fuel pressure are you getting when it is running?

Thanks guys.

Trackrash, the gauge is dead, so I have no clue what it was doing. At this point, I'm just going to order new lines, rebuild the carbs, PMO regulator and see what happens.

I bet that has a regulator in it. I see markings on the side. I would replace the gauge and see what pressure you have . If its below 5 the carbs will be happy IIRC.

It looks to be a high quality piece. I dont think you need to replace the braided lines? Do they go bad?

Agree, it is worth checking the pressure before continuing. That could be a regulator.

The braided lines don't last for ever. I had to replace the Aeroquip lines on my car a while back.

Good news is all of those hose ends $$$ are reusable.

Dwight, I found this fancy thing behind the front bumper

So not a lot of great news. The valves were in bad need of adjustment, so I did that. Went ahead and ordered the PMO regulator and some stuff to rebuild the carbs, got some new oil and filter. Pulled off the carbs to rebuild them. Took the first one apart. it went as expected.

A couple things were tighter than they should have been, and it was dirty, but not a big deal. Took the second one apart and noticed everything was way looser than the first carb. The diaphragms on the accelerator pump looked new, and the base spring was missing. Strange. Took the lid off, and pretty much crapped my pants. Brace yourselves.

First picture, the air corrector and emulsion tube are missing. Second, looks to be a tiny screw or something broken off in the corrector? Third, someone ran a freaking drill down the corrector, the emulsion tube is missing here again, and there seems to be something lodged in its place. I let the carbs soak for a couple of days. Tired using an EZ Out on the remaining brass that got drilled out but it would just slip. Then I noticed the drill got into the casting. That lip where the emulsion tube sits is pretty much gone.

So I'm guessing this thing is dead, which really sucks. Any opinions? Is it salvageable? New PMO carbs? Fuel injection? Find whoever did this and punch them in the face?
