Porsche Crest WTB: thru-the-grill fog/driving lights

Hi guys, trying to put together a complete set for my 71' T and it has been quite a chore and I'm ready to abandon the project. I bought a pair of Hella's only to find out they are not 118's. At this point I'll even consider using the Cibie ones or the cheap imitations someone on pelican was peddling, if I don't find correct Hella 118's. I want to have lights on this car this year. I sent pm to some of the guys. I prefer the whole kit (lights, brackets, wiring harness, relay, switch) if possible. Anyone?

Ahh, excuse me, cost effective fakes. Or whatever, anyway these look good and work quite well. They come with custom mounts and bolt directly to the standard horn grills. Comes complete with the mounts, lights, wiring and the switch. They are pretty nice and look very much like the originals only don't cost a million. I've got them on most of my early 911's. $120 shipped.

LOL!! sorry Tom, I didn't mean to put a negative spin on those very, very cost effective alternatives. It's actually your lights I was thinking of when I wrote that. I still want to see if I can put together an original kit, if not, I'll take a set of yours. thanks.

Check into getting a set of black 914 fog lights. They are pretty much the same as the 911s ones and, if you get them chromed, near impossible to tell them apart from original chromed 911 fog lights.

If you look closely, you will notice that the grills are also not factory originals. I cut them using a set of regular chrome grills and cardboard templates taken from some factory fog light grills. A drumel tool, a couple dozen cutting wheels and lots of time.

Not wanting to take this too far off topic, but Sergio, are those lights chromed 914 lights? If so, did you remove the brackets from the housing and then re-rivet them back on during the chroming process?

Thanks,
Eric

Eric,

I have done them both ways. This set has chromed brackets.

Are you looking for US fogs, Euro fogs or auxillary driving lights? The US fogs are not 118s. The case back is the same size though. The Euro fogs and auxillary driving lights use the 118 reflector however there are three types. Side full bulb shield, top half bulb shield and no bulb shield.

I have a set of grills and lights. I don't have Porsche brackets cause I don't believe they are worth the money people are asking for originals (or repops for that matter). I'm making my own.

The wiring harness is still available from Porsche last I checked. Don't know about the switch. If you are interested, I sent a PM with my email.

Cheers,

Michael, I sent you an email. Here are the lights I have which I thought were correct 118's. They are clean on the inside as well. Bulbs are there, looks like they have a blue tip on them. The lens measures 5 3/8"s across and the housing about 6 1/4" across. Flat on their face they measure about 2 1/4" depth. I don't know what they are.

Mercedes fog Johnny. I'd send them back if represented as 911 thru the grill. Never, Never.

Ian, you're golden. But, you already knew that huh! Clear or amber reflectors? Side or top bulb shield?

Ian's are 911 Euro TTG fogs by the way.

Michael,

The side shield is reeeeeally rare, I've only found one pair. Note that the side shield that I had was also an h-1 bulb, not h-3 like the center mounts are. Also note that the side mounted h-1 was for Italy only from my research.

WOW! Holy Crap! I thought the side shield was just an older version of the 118 reflector. I have three sets. One is driving, one is Euro fog, one is an older aftermarket set that came with one driving, one fog.

I've see a lot of Carellos with a side shield so, the Italy tie in makes sense. At least I thought Carellos are Italian.

Thanks for the pics Eric! I'd love to see a pic of the backs of all those cases while knowing which were Porsche supplied and which through aftermarket. I'll PM you my email if you're up to it.

All my pics are individuals since I've been geeking out on differences. I should take a family portrait. I've got other 911 and 914 sets which are neat. Specially the amber 914s.

Don't worry Johnny...Haven't forgotten ya.
