Hello,

Please could some one help me identify what this relay is for, and where the wires should go. in the process of cleanining them up, I have discovered that most of them weren't attached to anything!
The shorter wire is black/purple, the two longer wire are black an brown. There is another wire which is blue/yellow,( which was broken with different coloured wires attached, I have replaced the broken ones with a new blue/yellow), which went to the ignition coil. None of the others were attached to anything.

There are also 3 other wires on the ignition coil, which appear to be correct.

Any help is much appreciated, but please reply without too much jargon as I won't understand!!

Not needed Andrew.
It's part of the '69 smog system. May have been for the throttle compensator that was mounted on top of the doghouse, near the coil. Believe this was mounted on the drivers side of the engine compartment rearward of the voltage regulator.
Unless you're doing a concours restoration, I'd leave it disconnected but leave it in place. Is your car a '68 or '69?

Hello, thank for the information, my car is a late 1968. Why leave it not conected?

It's for the haphazard early smog system.(really part of the '69 smog solution but retrofitted to the '68 cars)
It leaves the throttle open, after you take your foot off the gas pedal, to help burn off hydrocarbons. It's a primitive system and will drive you crazy. Here's how it works:
You're driving along and come to a light. You take your foot off the gas pedal and apply the brake. The idle stays high to burn off non-ignited gas. The light changes quickly but you still have the high idle and while trying to get into 1st, you're crunching the gears. Still want to hook it up?
