Woodruff key installation

I have been struggling with the installation of a new woodruff key to the generator shaft / hub on my 1969 912. The key fits the circular generator shaft, but not the hub (too tight). I suspect this is to create a tight, non-slipping union, but don't want to start banning on it with a hammer, etc.
Then, what should the gap be between the hub and generator?

Update. No need to reply. The generator shaft is badly shaved by a wobbly pulley hub. New generator and all related parts now on order.
