Suspension pan Update

Well after removing riveted in pieces of shetmetal I find more rot, this time on the lateral supports, and rot in the right side corner of the original pan, so I will need to bring new metal from the corner to the new pan. I will post pics in the next few days

A heat gun made really fast work of scrapping the undercoating and pvc ish coating from the metal work.

Anyone ever weld in lateral supports that tie in to the suspension pan?

Regards

What VIN # does Greta have? My '65 (Coquette) is 350746. Fortunately, rust is not as problem except for some surface body rust from one winter season in Denver in 1968.

Have you tried to remove the glue that held the foam in the engine compartment? What did you use.

Good luck on the welding - I am a novice with a wire feed and it is harder that it looks!!

Greta's VIN is 454118

Have not gotten to the rear of the car, thankfully it looks real solid, (I pray)

I've got practice welding with my 72 Super Beetle, as usual the rust demons were there too, is it a German thing only?

Regards

I had a '55 vw ragtop and actually hit ground when stepping on the rear floor while changing a battery. ( in 1966) Amazing what a piece of plywood, black paint and a rubber floor mat can cover! I also used roofing tar on part of the rag top during a bad winter to keep the snow off my lap. Amazing what a person will do when they have no $. Every 60, 70 and 80s vehicle I have had seems to rust like crazy in this area if used in the winter.

Good luck on the project.
