gas in oil...

Okay I did a little searching, on the subject...but never got the solid answer I wanted.

I have gas in my oil...it's on the oil fill cap....crap.

I'm getting a compression/leakdown tester tomorrow.

I've only got 40 miles on it since I've owned it...4years now...the engine just sat before that. I understand it may have been rebuilt in the early 90's...

what are the top few things that could be the problem.

Gas collecting on the oil fill cap? Does it look like a milky gunk? If so it is water and will form even in good motors if run short distances in cool damp weather. To get rid of water, change oil and drive enough to heat the motor up well. It tends to collect in the breather tank so you can clean it out as well.

If you have gas in the oil the oil will smell and in advanced cases will thin the oil. A leaking mech fuel pump (common) or a messed up carb can do it.

good to know...I took a look at the fuel pump...there don't seem to be any tears in it...the diaphragm was brand new (NOS) just a year or two ago...I've only got 60 miles on the car (35 yesterday). not sure how many are on the engine.

Thanks for the help. There was a little "MAYO" gunk inside the oil cannister. The oil on the dipstick doesn't look or smell funny. (It's not thinner than it should be)

Oil in gas, usually a leaking fuel pump.

Have you checked float levels in your carbs? Happened to me, float was set to low and gas litteraly poured into engine.

Regards
