Horn comes on when battery is connected.

I have a 1976 Porsche 912e that I am restoring. I connected the battery and the horns sounded. I disconnected the horns and now I have a click when I connect the battery. What could be the problem.

Depends on the car, some of the newer ones may have more advanced and complicated electric stuff.

The old style is just 12V is run to the switch (normally open) in the steering wheel, and the output of that is connected to the horn.

The horn is just a speaker (coil of wire near a magnet, and connected to a diaphragm) with a spring to push it on one direction, then the coil is connected to what's basically a switch such that the spring pushes the speaker into the switch to turn it on, and when on the switch powers the coil such that it pushes the speaker in the opposite direction and turns off the switch (which then allows the spring to push it in the other direction).

This cycle causes it to oscillate and create noise.

Repairing the horn is normally an easy fix. I would start here, it fixed my problem.

Disconnect the battery
Pull the steering wheel off
Clean the connect of wire to steering wheel
Replace or clean your horn contact (see image)
Put it all back togehter
Connect the battery and give it a go

Interesting to read the fixes. Cleaning may do the job. I will give it a try.
In my case the horn would honk unexpectedly when I turned the steering wheel and would continue until I turned it to the right place. (A bit annoying out in traffic). It finally got so it drained the battery while resting.
My "fix" was to disconnect all the terminals at the battery relay..........no longer a problem but I have no horn!!!!
