912 to 911 conversion opinion

Need opinions and expertise on a touchy subject please.

I hope this doesn’t get me kicked off the forums!!!!

I just secured a 1976 912e with trans axel and a non-original 914 motor on a pallet.
I also have a 2.7 flat six that needs assembly - no trans

I’m considering putting the six cyl into the 912. I want more power but......I need a definitive answer once and for all.......does the added horsepower outweigh the added weight and added counterbalance?

What can be done to the type4 motor to grab a fist full of power, not just pinches of horsepower?

Can someone confirm for me that I cannot install the six to the 912 trans? Or is there a modification to the trans that be done for much less than sourcing out a used 915 trans.

This is my first Porsche, I’ve always had big type 1 vw motors so 4 cyl is my wheelhouse but I also am excited about owning my first flat six.

I could care less if I don’t install the six, just owning the motor is happiness enough but I need some real hp in the 912 so if anyone can lend some insight on what direction I could take, I would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Quinn

Quinn-you will need a disk that works with the 911 pressure plate and also fits on the 923 trans that goes with the 912e. The splines are different. Jake Raby sells a line of engine upgrades for the type 4 vw engine in the 912e, but you have a 914 engine so you should visit that forum for upgrade tips.

I have a 68 912 with a 3.0 liter six. It is much more than just bolting the engine in. Oil tank. Engine electrical. More engine cooling (Front Cooler). Gauges and proper senders. Motor mounts. Being yours is a LWB car it wont take as big of a hit with the added weight as a SWB car does. I love mine and its a blast to drive. Working on better braking now. Type 4 built well is a great option too.

I’ve gone down that road, I wouldn’t do it again because all the modifications. Your 2.7 with carbs etc will get you 160-180 hp depending on what you do to it. A 914 2.0 T4 with a cam, carbs and exhaust can get you 120 hp without going crazy on the heads. With the T4 you won’t have a weight penalty and you will be enjoying the 912 sooner with less $$.
