Engine face-lift and performance enhancment

Just finished the final engine face-lift and performance enhancement involving new:

- Viton flywheel oil seal
- OEM flywheel gland nut (torqued to 350 foot-pounds)
- Sachs clutch (didn't need throw-out bearing)
- Bosch generator, OEM v-belt, hubs, woodruff's, shims, and nut
- Gates Barricade fuel hose (and aluminum lines)
- MSD Blaster coil (vibration option)
- MSD VW Billet distributor (advance chart for small silver & blue springs selected, similar to 022 and 030 advance curves)
- MSD 8.5 mm spark plug wires
- NGK 3725 BPR8HS standard spark plugs (heat level is one step cooler than OEM)
- Powder-coated sheet metal
- Chromed and nickel-plated parts
- Aluminum crank pulley and nut (used original woodruff and internal washer)
- DEI titanium header wrap (amazingly cool engine bay now!)
- Oil filter, fuel filter
- Motul 300V Ester-based 20W-60 racing oil
- Changed out transaxle gear oil (80W-90)
- Wired brushed (drill) and POR-15 engine bay (gloss black, after pressure wash, POR degreaser, POR metal-prep).

Velocity stacks were also added to the Weber 40 IDFs:

MSD 6A was installed on back deck inside:

Close up of the MSD VW billet distributor:

After installing the engine in the car, it started right up with all four Weber mixture screws turned out 1.5 turns, and idle screws turned in a half-turn. Plugs were gapped at 0.030" and seem to be working fine. Valves were also adjusted when engine was on stand. During acceleration now, the low-to-mid range RPM torque is substantially greater than what the stock OEM 009 distributor and Bosch coil offered. Recall, I also added stacks to the Webers, and titanium header heat wrap, which help performance. Altogether, having a big piston kit, Tricom 105 cam, with Webers & stacks, MSD everything, and header wrap, I am certainly beyond the OEM horsepower. The Motul 300V ester core-based racing oil also quieted down lifter noises, and will help on cold start-ups because of the ester-coating of internal engine parts.

I am considering getting a jet kit for the Webers, since the idle screws are out a full turn right now. It was also interesting to note that the idle was faster as soon as I added the header wrap and re-started the engine, suggesting that a power boost resulted from the increased exhaust flow. After a freeway drive, the engine bay temperature was probably reduced by 50% or more (guessing) by the header wrap, which also helps performance.

In addition, here is a pic of the (French) Motul 300V ester core-based racing oil: (don't ask how much it costs per 2 liter can!).
