1968 Torsion Bar Fitment

Putting a 912 back together and the rear torsion bars are 1/8-1/16” proud of the cross tube. This doesn’t seem correct!

The torsion bar should be inside the springplate. Do not pound it in there! If it won't go in easy pull it out and clean both the inboard and outboard splines on both the torsion bar and the car. Sometimes I use a small triangular (3 sided) file to clean any burrs on the torsion bar splines. Don't over file. Be careful. I use a broom handle with a stiff wire brush for the inboard spines in the car then a vacuum with extensions to suck out the rust and dust. I use anti seize on the splines. I used to use axle grease. If everything is clean you shouldn't have to use force.

Anyone knows what is the unit on the left with the cooling fins on it connected to a metal pipe?
