68 912 with 914 1.7 alternator wiring help

Okay so, I purchased a 912 back in September and I always keep a tender on it when I am not driving it. (Drive it short distances one / twice a week)

Well I noticed that the battery was not charging when I was driving it. So I purchased a new alternator, with out thinking and realized once I had it all installed that it was not wired..

From the Alternator I have 4 wires. See images below for visual reference.
Wire 1 yellow with black stripe (thicker wire) is going to the starter.

Wires are all unhooked with tape over the ends.
2 Red
3 Green
4 Brown

From the 912 harness you can see there is a yellow and a blue wire. I think the blue
wire goes to the gauge, the other one I am not sure.

I think I need to purchase a voltage regulator but I am not positive which one because I do not think the 914 one would fit. Also not positive which wire should go where.

Hopefully one of you gurus can points me in the right direction!

First check that your dashboard generator light is functioning - it’s critical to the charging system.
I’d suggest changing the voltage regulator for one that matches the alternator output.
Is your tach working?

The tach is working, also there is a 12v battery in the car already. The dashboard light does not work for the charging system. I think that is the blue wire that is unhooked. It is in the first picture sitting on the coil.

You’ll need to get that light working for the charging system to function. Make sure that light is not grounding to the gauge - if varying current does not pass through it the charging system is not going to work.
First make yourself a test lead with the weakest inline fuse you can find and test that blue wire with 12v to see if the dash light goes on. If not you’ll need to go to the gauge and trace the problem.
As for the yellow wire, it should function as a remote starter wire. If you test it with 12v, be certain your car isn’t in gear.
Again, I’d suggest changing the regulator.

I will check it out tonight. Right now it is not wired to a regulator, it only runs off of what charge the battery has.

I found this regulator but I do not think it will fit the car right.

I am no expert but the alternator
Conversion kit I purchased indicates that I must remove the regulator because alternators have a built-in regulator. Someone please confirm!

Bob:
I think the conversion kits are for the 912/356 motors and use the VW Type 1 alternators which do have built-in regulators. This 912 has been converted to a Type 4 motor (914/912e/VW bus) which originally came with an alternator using an external regulator.

Correct! The 914 alternator needs an external voltage regulator.

Still no luck with charging.

From Alternator
Green wire is going to DF.
Red wire d+ red wire also carries 12v
Brown wire is grounded to body, and the regulator.
Thick Red/black wire goes to starter where it links with the battery.

Misc wires, Black pin on B+ goes directly to the battery
61 is wired to a blue wire that I think goes to the tach.

Let me know if you guys have any ideas on this one.

Here’s the starting point. when you turn on your ignition switch you must get a solid dash generator light. Nothing will happen until you can get it to work, as it is the critical point at which the regulator allows the charging to begin. Here’s a great description from a fellow Pelican JimT.
