69 912 Targa Restoration

Hello guys,
This is the beginning of my restoration project. I purchased the car knowing that it needed some help and love. The car was purchased at a price that I consider to be fair since all the bits and pieces were in-tacked.
Here is a major list for the proposed project. As you know there is a ton of small projects connected with the major stuff listed.
1. Disassemble car and inspect
2. Build Rotisserie
3. Put car on rotisserie
4. Clean under-carriage and inspect for rust damage and other damage
5. Replace front suspension points and sheet metal
6. Replace pedal sheet metal
7. Replace driver and passenger inner& outer rockers
8. Replace driver & passenger jack points
9. Repair driver & passenger torsion tube

Okay, there is list. Now wish me a lot of luck!!

Thanks,
Russell

As I am 90% finished with a bare metal restoration of a 69 912 Targa let me know if you run into anything you can't figure out. I'm happy help with detail photos or anything that might help.

Here is my first free tip that it took me a while to figure out:

Half way through 69 they changed the details of all of the rubbers around the targa roof (behind windshield frame, front of targa bar and both sides of the targa roof). These parts are all listed as 1970 911 parts but if your car is a late 69 then those are what you will need. If you email me a picture of the side seals of your roof (the ones that seal the roof to the top of the side windows) I should be able to tell you which you have and save a lot of confusion later. My email is Laurence(dot)jitts(at)att(dot)net.

PS your car looks great in the photo and I'm sure it's just the ten foot illusion but it seems a shame to have to tear her apart. Tell us more about your resto plans. Will she be restored to showroom or do you have your own special plans..... Etc.

Hey Laurence,
Thanks for the tip. Do you have a link to your build? I have been working on the restoration for 4months. I'll post some photos shortly.

Alas I have never logged my build here on the forum. Ive been going on for a year and should finish in the next month or so. I have kept a photo journal and I'm currently trying o figure out how to include photos if required - I'm not much of a techno-geek sort of guy so it will probably take a while.

Looks Great so far. Doesn't really look like it needs a lot of work but that is from a far distance...NY.

Are you aware of the 912bbs.org forums?

Hey,
Yup. I am aware of 912bbs. I keep telling myself that I need to start a thread there too.

Yes, the car does look good on the top side. But the under the car is where the work is needed. I'll start posting some photos soon.

912 Restoration

Here are some early inspection photos. From inspection on a lift the front suspension locating points need help, the jack points need help, and the rear torsion bar tube needs some help too.
It appears that the suspension points were welded to the car instead of bolted and bondo was used to cover up rust issues. The floor pans were also installed incorrectly. The torsion tube was replaced at some point and was installed poorly.

So there is a lot of work to be done...

Some photos of the front suspension

The jack points...

Why would someone weld the suspension on?

That is a good question. Why would someone weld on the suspension? Well...it is because they did not know what they were doing. It appears that this car has had three owners. The car has had some repairs that make sense and others that is just WRONG!
Here are some more photos...
The car during the strip down:

Rotisserie photos. It took me about two weekends to build these.

Some early suspension point photos. Yes. That is bondo covering up all rust.

Jack point photos. It is hard to tell here, but there is no inner rocker and the floor is not attached properly.

Holy crap!!! and I thought I had issues. All I had to do was replace the floor from rear kick board through to nose and otherwise just patch as required. You have some serious work ahead my friend but I'm glad to see someone taking the time to save another lost soul. Good luck and please ask if you get lost anywhere - if I don't know someone will.

Here are some more photos of repair patches of the front suspension area.

There is a lot of work to be done. Here is the tip of the day...Never buy an early Porsche if it has lived its life in the north-east. All three owners lived in the snow belt region.

Also, you should notice that there is a brass looking weld. This is some brazing that one of the owners used or had some body use to repair the car.

More to come.

Hey,
Thanks for the comment. This is very exciting. I am very happy with the restoration so far. I can't wait to fit the outer rocker with the door.
Here are some photos of the driver side rocker replacment.

Im guessing you've done stuff like this before.

And as to your comment that we should never buy cars from the Northeast, mine was Texas born and raised and still had some pretty decent rust issues - I don't think rust cares where it lives.
