High current draw with ignition on & engine not running
Hello 912 Owners,
New user here- need some help in getting my 68 912 running after idle for a few years. The engine attempts to start but battery ran low after a few tries. While doing some further troubleshooting I notice that the battery draws ~3amps (battery ground side measured) with the ignition switch in the on position (engine not running at the time). This seems very high to me so I start checking for excessive current draw by individually disconnecting certain items and remeasuring battery current draw. Here are my actions so far (I have electronic ignition): -disconnected voltage regulator leads, no change -disconnected generator leads, no change -disconnected starter and solenoid leads- no change -disconnect both horns leads, no change -disconnected both parking lamps leads, no change -removed each fuse individually, no change -headlamps work but dim -add on gauges operate ok, voltmeter & oil pressure -haven't check cigarette lighter yet Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks |
Suspect an electronic ignition malfunction giving a similar result as one would expect with a conventional ignition when points fail to open and constantly conduct electricity.
