Car Jack
I have never trusted the factory jack that came with the car since my 1968 911 rolled forward enough to twist off the nose of the jack. This happened many years ago on a semi steep side of the road incline.
I bought a Sears small 2 ton floor jack but it is too big and too heavy to put in the trunk. My Targa top takes up most of the trunk space. What small compact jack do you use or recommend? What about these Bilsten jacks I see on e-bay, are they any better?? I saw a compact hydraulic sissors jack that may work under each wheel but doesn't lift high enough to be used at the body jack tubes. Thanks for your recommendations and help. Ron D

I picked up a small hydraulic at Wally World...its a scissors type but has plenty of lift height. All fits nicely into a small black plastic case, I don't keep it in the trunk however(I put my floor jack up there once...first bump I hit I ended up with a nice dimple in my hood...errr...bonnet...whatever the heck it is) but it fits perfectly behind the passenger seat and since noone will be in the back of my car anytime soon...

Kevin:
That sounds like just the kind I need. Do you know how high it extends? Does Wally World have a web site? Thanks, Ron D

Morrie: I tried Wal Mart's web site but the only thing I can find are tires in Automotive category and no jacks in the Tools category. Any suggestions. Would like to see a picture of this jack.
thanks, Ron D

I had a Wal Mart jack of the sort Kevin describes for my Jag E-type (since sold). It worked very well, and yes, I think it would fit in the smuggler's well.

Guys , the one I have won't fit the smugglers box...thats actually what I was thinking when I bought it. The plastc case measures something like 8inches tall by 8 inches wide by about 11 inches long...(I'm just guessing from memory here) and it was just large enough to not want to fit(I might have been able to get it in there but I don't think it would have been easy to get back out). When I get home today I'll check the manufacturer and the numbers on it and reprt back. I believe it has about a 18 inch lift height...I've only used it once and it picked the car up plenty to swap a tire...of course if I'm going to do any work under the thing I use floor jacks.

Hit the local junkyard. You should be able to find one that fits right and it will be cheap.

Wal-Mart has this hydraulic sissors jack. It was on sale for $14 down from $17. With a plactic case.
This jack only lifts to 14" which will raise the rear tire off the ground but you need a 2x4 under the jack to lift the front tire too. The cars jack tube is not in the cars center of gravity. The jack has a safety pin that goes thru the piston to lock it in place a nice feature. The jack will slide under the rear wheel shock mount and you can jack up the rear tire. It does not fit under the front wheel ball joint, jack's too tall. Ron D

This past weekend I was changing my brake light switch and didn't recall my car lifting off balance like that..... Curiosity got the best of me and I ran out to the garage and snapped a couple of pictures.
Couldn't help but wonder if the difference is Targa vs Coupe. Also it appears that your front travels more than mine. The handle is blocking the view in the second shot but the rear is off about an 1/8", the front is off approximately 6". The jack has a range of 5-13.5".

Ron,
My coupe also jacks up like Scot's, with both wheels coming off the ground at about the same time. Maybe its that trickle charger you have in the trunk.... craig |

If you have a full tank of gas, a Targa top, original jack, tool kit and extra tools stuffed in the smugglers box the weight balance is off center.
I carry enough tools to over-haul it if necessary plus spare clutch cable, plugs, points, oil dist cap & rotor, oil lines and more. Thanks Ron

That's probably it, nothing under the hood ‘cept air… no spare, no tools, no jack. Say a prayer everytime I leave the garage.
