High gearing - is this right?

Just got my '66 912'E' back from having its wiring sorted, or at least partially sorted. Still no clock, temp or outside temp gauges, but at least I now have lights, a horn, instrument lights and - most importantly - a rev counter.

Which brings me to my latest confusion. According to the speedo and rev counter, the car is turning 3,000rpm at 50mph. Is this right? Or is either the speedo or the rec counter overreading? I suspect the rev counter; I'll try comparing the speedo with my GPS tomorrow to see how accurate it is.

Cheers

James

4 speed or 5 spd? The owners manual has a spec sheet of rpm vs speed per gear.

It's a 5spd, but IIRC the top gear ratios are the same ??

Right. Final drive ratio is the same on 4 or 5 speed. With stock differential 3000 rpm should be 57 miles per hour (don't have kph ) on the original tires 165 hr 15. I have heard other 912 'ers refer to a low gear option in their cars as mountain or track gearing.
