I know there's a wealth of info on the board from people who have done this in the past. However, the threads I tended to follow with interest used the 912e transmission with the 3.0.
Few quick things off the top of my head that might help with your quest for info (things to consider/verify): The 923 transmission clutch is actuated differently (different direction) than the 915. This may require at least a different (longer/shorter?) clutch cable when using a 915 in a 912e chassis. I believe axle flange type may be different too. The injection system differs as well, so some light electrical changes will be needed. You'll of course need an oil tank (and remove the current ECU pocket and cut a hole for the oil tank filler/filter bungs) and oil cooler and oil lines run up front.. Good news is the 6cyl engine mount fixtures are there, so it's a matter of buying 6cyl engine mounts to bolt up the engine/trans assembly. I don't have the chance now to verify specifics, but hopefully this can guide your search. Best of luck! I've never seen a build thread on this conversion, but if you have the opportunity... it'd be great to see. Last edited by JossP80; 04-11-2021 at 08:29 AM.. |

Im late to the party, but I'm currently putting a 2.7 in my 912e so I can hopefully help answer some questions you may have. It's really not too difficult and JossP80 hit the major factors already.
FABRICATION: Cut out the ECU pocket and cut the passenger side engine mount off to fit the oil tank. All the brackets and studs for the front oil lines are already there. The engine mounts are already in car. Easy. TRANSMISSION: The transmission (assuming you are using the 923 still), will need a few parts changed out. The 912e is a push style clutch, whereas the 911 clutch is pull. I went about tackling this by converting the 923 to pull by switching out the guide tube, clutch fork, and clutch release arm to the 911 version. (NOTE: You need a 3.2 guide tube for this method. The 2.7 one has the sealing surface in the wrong location.) The clutch is a combination of 2.7 flywheel and a 70-71 clutch disk with a normal 915 clutch pressure plate. You need the 70-71 disk because it is a 225mm size with the correct spline count for the 912e. I dont know 3.0s as well, but since it had the 915, I think it would be the same. I haven't changed the clutch line but I haven't gotten there yet. I dont remember them being different in my case. If you are using the omega spring clutch release lever you might. THROTTLE: You will also need to change the throttle linkage out to the 911 version but the bellcrank location is already tapped. Just put the stud and bellcrank on and change the tunnel linkage. WIRING: I can't answer wiring for the 3.0 since it differs from the 2.7 quite a bit but it was very simple on my car. Just get some wiring diagrams and compare them. I'm running a MSD for ignition and had to do some minor changes for 14 pin connector. You will need to run a line to the 14 pin for the oil pressure gauge and I ran a second for switched 12V power. I'm just using a Tach Adapt to keep the stock tachometer because I'm cheap. The voltage regulator is also different slightly but I want to say it should plug into the engine harness. Dont quote me on that part. FUEL: I replaced the fuel pump and tunnel lines since my type 4 was carbed and ratty. Maybe a good idea anyway. You will need a fuel accumulator and filter regardless but the mount is already in the car. The lines are the same in and out. HEATING: You may have a different method but I backdated the heat and had SSI's. Just keeps it cleaner/easier. That's pretty much everything off the top of my head. If you have a question, lemme know and I can try to answer it. My car should get its engine installed and hopefully running in a couple weeks. |

Sorry for the lack of….
Anyway I didn’t end up getting the car. Should have. Maybe still could but as it happens **** came up. Anyway would have been cool. I did end up getting a VW double cab with a 2276 stroker motor. One day that will be sold and a 911 motor installed. |
