Help please! Car won't start!

Hi,
I am hoping someone here might be able to help me please.
I have a 1968 912, which I have been working on for about 4 years, and have had to learn everything from scratch, as I imported an (unexpected) non-runner from USA to UK.

I finally got it running, but there was a lot of spluttering and backfiring, so I decided to check the carbs. I bought a carb synchronizer and put it on number 4 cylinder on the carburetor and adjusted the bubble as per instructions. I moved it to number two cylinder, but the car didn't like it at all. It coughed and spluttered and then stopped altogether. I removed the synchronizer and tried to start the car again, but it wouldn't start and has not run since. It turns over, but won't fire up, even though there is a spark at the plugs.

I have tried:
Checking and cleaning the spark plugs
replacing distributor cap and rotor arm
replacing points and condenser
Checked the timings and valve settings (at least twice!)
Removed and cleaned the carburetors
Checked it is set at the correct TDC
Checked all cylinders for compression - all fine
Checked the fuel pump and fuel
Charged the battery (Several times!)
All plug leads are new and in the correct order
I have tried slowly turning the distributor with someone turning the engine over to see if it help it fire up, but still nothing.

I did notice, when I tightened the distributor locking collar with the ignition on, and as I touched the nuts with the spanners to tighten it, the points sparked. I don't know if this is right or not? It doesn't look like the points are touching metal inside, so I don't know why it would spark and if this has anything to do with it not starting.

If anyone has any suggestions of anything else I can check, or something that might explain the problem I would be really grateful as I am on the verge of giving up with it!

Any suggestions very welcome!

Thank you

Andrew

Thanks for all your help.
I have found out what is now. It was 'Cylinder wash'.
I have put a teaspoon of oil in the spark plug holes and now it seems fine!

Many thanks

Andrew
