912 Engine Replacement
 

If a 912 replacement engine was purchased from Porsche in 1969, would it be stamped with a 1969 type number, i.e., 409---- or would it have no number?

No serial numbers on the 3rd piece of a replacement engine.

... not just a replacement motor/case but every motor;/case it also referred to as the timing cover. Two pieces are the case halves, the third piece covers the crank/cam gears and houses the distributor, fuel pump and some oil system pieces. A replacement motor/case will have no serial number on the timing cover; a replacement case will have a 'K' embossed on the left side case lug, just ahead of the generator stand:

Thanks for the education. Since the engine has a serial number (4095137) and there was a number on the 3rd piece under the oil filter that coincides with the '69 model year, I am guessing that the engine began life in a '69 912. No idea what happened, but the engine was replaced in 1969 so basically a new engine.
