starter removal

I want to remove my 912e starter for cleaning and service. removed the wiring and the bottom mounting nut, but I cannot see or get a wrench on the top nut from under the car. Do I need to remove the top engine tin on that side or is there a trick to getting at that nut??? Thanks for any ideas.

You do not need to remove any tin. You need a long extension with a socket to get at it. It’s not easy. Then that bolt that goes through needs to be held by an assistant inside the engine compartment. That bolt is at the top of the case near the center of the case just to the right of the tin.
