Tech Question: Porsche 912 body specs compared to '96+ 911

Hey guys,

May not be the right area to post this in but hopefully someone can help answer this question for me.

So I'm looking to get either a 1975 911 or 1974 and under 912 to convert into a K3 935 tribute race car. I know they started racing them using the 1976 911s but was wondering how similar the body styles are, scale of the two cars, etc...

Ideally I would like to get the K3 kit to fit the 912 or '75 911 and not have to do a whole lot of extra fiberglass work. I am told the 1996 911s will fit the bodykit perfectly.

Only reason I'm looking at '75 and under cars is because of California smog purposes. Would like a smog exempt car to keep it street legal.

Thanks!

What you need is a 74 or 75 911. These are long wheelbase (LWB) cars. The only LWB 912s are the 69 912 (getting pretty valuable and many are rust buckets) and the 76 912E which needs to be smogged in Ca. The remaining 912s are short wheelbase cars and pre-74 911s are really too valuable to use as a donor for the project.
So, IMO the best donor would be the 74 or 75 911 because:
1. Relative low cost
2. High production numbers = more choice.
3. Since 2.7 motors had problems, it’s still possible to find rollers w/o motors.
4. Cal smog exempt.
5. You’ll be starting off with a 6cyl. “smile bumper” car which is dimensionally the easiest starting point for your conversion project.
Good luck,
Bill

Great thanks for the info! Definitely helped out a lot.

What WFBowen told you is correct. Even if you found a good 69 LWB you would still have challenges. A 915 trans will not bolt up. You would have a lot of modifications to the torque tube. The entire front 912 suspension can be swapped out for a later 911 suspension which is a direct bolt in.
