I just bougt a new weber 40 carb kit. My current 912 has an old set of 40's that I rebuilt. They are so much better, but over 25 years old and some parts are obsolete and really beat up. I thought a new set would do some good. Anyway, on the side of the webers that face inward agains the fan shroud of the new weber 40's there is a spot for another connection cable in addtion to the linkage connection--it appears to be for a choke cable. Seems to me when I go to install, this will only interfere more than the old cabs do again the fan shroud--Right side where the carb almost touches the shroud. Any ideas? Am I supposed to remove this choke and replace with the flat plate that is on my old carbs--or, can I put an adapter on the intakes and raise the carbs a bit so clearance is easy. And if I install with this choke on without any cable, will it interfere with performance?

Remove the chokes. Not needed.
Use Choke block off plates from old carbs. |

Well, I've been a bit busy--so I just started attacking today by removing the old carbs and intakes. Looks like the old carbs were definately the source for my small gas leaks--and the the old rubber plugs on top of the heads were both leaking oil. I'm sending out the intakes to be blasted and am ordering the plug fittings, then I will put back together and report. I'm sure it will make a marked improvement.

Hey, did you get a manual or diagram wit your carbs? I'd love to get a copy of it if you did. I'm rebuilding and then reinstalling 40 IDFs and I've no clue how they should go onto the 912. Any help here?

The info they sent with the carbs was pretty poor. The best info that I have is from Harry Pellow's book--secrets of the inner circle. there is a few pages on how to install webers--either on non-weber intakes or with weber intakes. If they are non-weber intakes, you will need an adapter for the manifold to weber mounting. I'm unsure if this proplem is the same for all models, but on my 912, the carb set most forward on the drivers side of the car interferes with the firewall /behind the back seat ever so slightly. There is a small tab of metal--a seam for the wall that hit right against the axle assembley of the new weber carb. You could either offset the axle (which I did not do) or you can bend/remove some metal there against the firewall (mine had already been beaten down years ago--I just cleaned it up a bit.) It's possible that a newer generation intake doesn't have the same problem that I experienced, but it may. Again, not an expert--but once I solved that problem, they went on quite nicely.

I haven't recieved it yet but I bought the "weber technical manual" at www.cbperformance.com, for $10 I figure I can't go wrong.
There is also a Haynes Weber manual I have that is pretty in depth on the weber line. So what are you going to do with the old ones?? Are they at all salvagable or rebuildable? I am looking for an ID-40 or 2 to learn how to rebuild them. If they would work on the car, great, if not at least I learn how to rebuild my existing ones. Pierce maniolfd has all exploded view diagrams availalbe on lin eif that helps at all. C |
