The parts list for the 912E shows 2 brackets that I assume secure the stock muffler to the frame. My 912E showed up with an aftermarket Bursh that did not connect to the car's frame. I'm trying to convert a '74 914 banana muffler to my 912E, and would like to get it as close to stock as possible.
Can somebody who still has a stock setup let me know where on the frame these muffler brackets attach. If you feel really industrious, a picture would be grately appreciated. Thanks. |

Are you sure they secure to body/frame? Isnīt it so that ,engine moves a bit against the frame? If muffler is fitted to the body , what will happen? As you said , BURSCH is not connected to body at all.So it moves freely with the engine.Or if it is fitted to frame , is there somekind of rubber thing to allow some movement? Sorry , but I havenīt seen the original muffler ever fitted. Someone must know , though.

Here's the parts diagram. I've circled the brackets:

Part number 8 replaces the alternator strap on the fan housing and extends on down to support the heat exchanger / muffler connetion. Part number 5 picks up an 8 mm bolt on the fan housing (drivers side) and suppoerts the driver's side heat exchanger muffler connection.
I have a question about the parts that attach the flanges on the heat exchangers to the heads (I think). There are four of them, two per side, that help support the heat exchangers. Does anyone have a picture of them and do they bolt to the head casting bosses just below the valve cover? If so, do they bolt to the vertical face or the horizontal face of the boss. I am also looking for a picture of how the fan (part number 21) mounts to the engine. Thanks, --John

Thanks John,
That helps alot. It makes more sense that it would bolt to the fan housing than the frame. I'm not sure about your first question, but concerning the fan, it connects to a bracket that is to the right of the left shock tower in the engine compartment (see pic below). The small part of the fan rests in the indentation of the bracket, and is held on by a large hose clamp. Hope this helps. |

You guys seem to know everything.... SILVER912E;the muffler that you are trying to fit , that -74 bananamuffler from 914 , how close fit is it? As I have heard many times ( never seen ) mentioned that one 911 muffler is a close match. And that someone has done SS muffler to 912 E too. Most likely from a 911 parts. As I am also interested in other solutions.Currently driving with a BURSCH.

Silver912e thanks for the photo, it helps a lot. My first question is about the brackets that are welded to the inside flanges of the heat exchangers. Do you know what they connect to? It looks like that they might connect to square shaped bosses that are cast into the heads below the valve cover. A short metal strap may connect the heat exchanger brackets to the heads at the bosses. I have 914 heads which don't use the bosses and are un-drilled. Any light that you can shed on how the heat exchangers brackets are connected to the engine is appreciated.
Thanks, --John

Eki - The '74 914 banana muffler is the same as the '74 911 muffler. I have one but haven't done the conversion. It looks like the flanges on the muffler will have to be removed & rotated 180 degrees and welded back on. Also the bolt holes in the flanges need to be filled in & redrilled to line up properly with the 912E heat exchangers. I plan to take it to a weldong shop in the next month, so I'll let you know how it turns out.
John - Not sure about you're other question. The only bracket on my exchangers is welded form the ouside of the exchanger to the flange. This weld can break due to vibration. When I took mine apart, there wasn't anything that connected the exchanger to the head. Maybe post a pic |

I just canīt wait to see how it works out. I have had these passion of getting a SS muffler for my 912E. Something that would look good , sound good , and last forever..... and not cost TOO much.... I think many 912E owners would like to know and see how your project turns out.Hopefully you can get some pictures of it when finished.

Silver912e,
Have you removed the current muffler and put the 912 "bannana" muffler up in the car yet? I have a 67 912 with a 914 2.0 motor in it. I had the same muffler and tried it. I am using real 912E engine sheetmetal. The issue is the bannana muffler will hit the sheetmetal that covers the fan. The 912E sheetmetal is wider from the fan to accomodate the smog pump pulley system. The distance from the sheetmetal to the rear apron may be wider on the 912E due to the restyled rear bumper. If so, you can make a spacer to move the bannana muffler back enough to clear the sheetmetal. Also, you are right about the mounts but you have missed one thing. The mounts on the 912E exhaust are angled and the 914 style are straight. I am running a modified 912E bursch connected to VW412 heat exchangers. The VW412 heat exchangers have the same flanges as the 914. If your car doesn't require smog, this is a great alternative. You will save alot of weight and engine heat by removing the thermal reactor system. See my picture below and check my site for other pictures of the engine with the exhaust system. BTW, a stock 914 tube type muffler will bolt directly on to the VW 412 heat exchanger/headers and not cause a clearance problem. It's just UGLY! |

Thanks for the info Tony,
I haven't done mine yet, but there is someone on the SoCal912 board who has done it. I'll look through some old post and see if I can find him and see if he had any clearance problems. My understanding is that the 912E originally came with the banana style muffler, but it may have been a different size than the 914 unit. |

OK, I'm finally at the point in my engine rebuild where I could mock-up the heat exchangers and the engine tin (see picture).
When I lifted the muffler up & aligned the flanges, the tin that juts out for the fan seemed to fit perfectly into the semi-circle indentation in the center of the muffler. I haven't had the flanges on the muffler rotated yet, but I think this may work. I'll post more when it's actually bolted together. Again, this muffler is for the '74 911 and 914. It also does not have the EGR pipe that a stock 912E muffler would have. ![]() |

What Heat exchangers are those?

Nevermind.... They are 912E heat exchangers... That's why the width is right for the 914 2.0 muffler.

The muffler in your picture , has double inlets on both sides? Is that original configuration ? I thought that the 911 bananamuffler had single inlets on both ends? So is that for 914 only ? Or did 911 came with that type of flange too?I am sure that turning the flanges around shouldnīt bee too difficult.
Keep us informed ! e k i |

Yes, that's original. I'm not sure but I think the 911 muffler has changed from year to year. This is a Dansk muffler.

How is your conversion of this 914 muffler going together? Mounted it to your 912E yet ? Problems ?
Or ready ? Photos.... e k i |

I'm working on getting the fuel injection system back on my engine. I'll probably get back to the muffler next week.
