2056cc 912 Lives!
Well, I'm finally back in the saddle of my '69 912. After a 9 month restoration/rebuild I've finally gotten my car back on the road. Along with rust repair and a repaint, I've got the full Koni suspension buttoned up, the brakes done, and the 2056cc T4 engine conversion running. I dropped it a few inches in front, and am working on getting some Fuchs for it right now, and the ride height is about where I want it.
I took it out for the first time on Sunday night, and all I can say is WOW. I drove the car when I first got it with the stock 1600 and the original Boge shocks/struts, along with a messed up clutch and bad brakes, and I can say it has been completely transformed. It pulls like a train just off idle, and when I shifted out of 3rd about about 80mph it just stuck me back in the seat in 4th (it's only a 4-speed). I shut it down at just over 90mph since the country roads out here are not the best kept and wadding up my fresh resto is not my idea of fun. For those of you who are contemplating the T4 conversion, I have to say DO IT! It's a completely reversible change and the power vs. expense is worth it. That's not to say it's cheap, as with anything you need to pay to play, but it pulls almost as hard as my friends '67 911S off the line. I was impressed. The combo I have is the same as Jake Raby's 912 special, and it does run carburetors. Jake did all the dynamic balancing on this, and helped me with the setup. He's a hell of guy with a great product, so definitely look him up if you have interest in this. Specs: -1.7L EA case (drilled/tapped/plugged) -1.7L heads, 44x36 stainless valves, HD springs, chromo-retainers, port and polish, 3-angle valve job, 45cc chambers by Headflowmasters 71mm stock crank 2.0L rods w/ARP bolts 96mm KB cast pistons Webcam cam and lifters (grind is ancient Chinese secret) Shadeck 30mm T1 pump 914 flywheel, 215 clutch & PP 914 cooling tin (modified to fit 912 body) NOS 411 heater boxes Bus header Turbo muffler with mandrel bent tubing Full dynamic balancing by Raby's Dual 44 IDF Webers on port-matched manifolds Compression is "adequate" and over 9:1 In process Pics: ![]() ![]() I love this thing!!! Now for rims and sway bars! Later, G |

Love the subtle look! Go for the Weltmiester 19MM/16MM front/rear sway bar combo along with some getting those steel wheels widened to 6" and 205/60-15s all around and you'll keep the sleeper look going. With the Koni's, the car will stick like glue! I would also suggest Yokohama AVS Intermediate rubber if you can find it. Let'r rip!

I drove this car as well, it's a Monster. I love the powerband of the 2056 with the cam/CR combo... It's a great pulling motor and just sounds awesome.
I have a 2270 in my Bug and I am going to be looking for a 912 myself... I love the feel of the 912 but I don't have the $$$$ for a 911 yet. It's the perfect transition. Later, Tom |

Love the T4 - I had actually bought a T4 engine, but sold it and kept my car closer to stock (1720).
Car looks great. Is that polo red? Keep us posted on the progress.

Thanks for the praise guys! I've been tuning it, and by a marked out distance I can run close to 100mph in the quarter. This is assuming my speedometer is close though. I've had it up to just over 110mph, but the stock 165s don't like it too much. I'll wait until the new rubber is on it, and then take it to the track! G |

Nothin like breaking in a new motor....
![]() "Hey, how do you break a motor in?" Break in the cam, set the rings, then give it hell. If it breaks, it wasn't built right... ![]() Keep your foot in it G!!!! Later, Tom |

Minimal to huge, depending on how mild / wild you want your Type 4 to be. But it's a pretty straightforward bolt-up with a few minor niggles to take care of (engine mounting bar, sealing tin and exhaust).

I do not know what color red that really is, but I love it! Can you post the specs (formula) for it?
And since I don't know anything about VWs, is that a VW engine? Last edited by snowman; 06-12-2003 at 07:34 PM.. |
