1 or 2 batteries?

I would like to know how common, if at all, it is to have 2 12 volt batteries in a 912? Thank you.

The '69 912 had one battery. The '69 911 had two batteries.

Anytime the 911 was upgraded the 912 recieved the same changes which was from 1966 to 1969. My 1966 912 has battery posts to accommodate 2 batteries.

Thru '68, neither the 911 or 912 had 2 batteries. If your '66 has two dedicated battery boxes, then it has likely had a front clip from a newer car.

Wrong! My dad purchased the car new and it’s never been in an accident. I’ve since inherited it.

Can you post pictures of the dual battery set up for your '66?

In the interest of factual information, here’s how Porsche’s PET parts catalog helps to clarify it. In diagram #1, you’ll see that all models up to and including 1968 have a single battery. In diagram #2 for 1969 models a change occurs where the models display differences; 912 calls for a single battery while the 911 gets two.
Jess: You state that your car has “ battery posts to accommodate 2 batteries.” You might be referring to an additional grounding stud, possibly for RHD production options or electrical grounding. Either way, the 1969 model year 911 had two batteries and a longer wheelbase to improve weight distribution. The 912 didn’t need this so a single battery was retained.
A few photos would definitely help clarify the discussion.

The exception in '69 was if it was a euro. My '69 912 targa came stock in Germany with 2 batteries. They are the only ones I've seen in 912's. You might float the question on Samba and the 912 Registry as well.
