Are the fuchs real or not?
How can you tell the differance between the real deal fuchs and a good fakes. Just bought a set of 14 x 5.5 polished fuchs from 912 registry I believe they are the real thing but just want to know for sure.

how light are they? thats the 1st tip off.
to really know though, look for a porsche parts number on the back (901..... or 911.....or somthing along those lines). also you should see a small fox head on the back too. (fuchs=fox in german) |
Where would fox head or part number be. I think I might have been had :( I hope not guy seemed real nice and still advertises on 912 registry. I sent him an e-mail also inquiring. Whatever they turn out tobe I also need to know how to measure because I want to put some tires on them. I have a 67 912 and want to put as much tire as I can fit onto these rims which I think are 14 X 5.5 without making any modes to my arches, no spacers and keep it as close as I can to original so my speedo and tach arent so far off. I was told 195/70/14 Dunlaps by Cgarr but he has a 69 with differant arches.

195/70/14's are what i have on my 14's.
do your wheels feel a little heavy? if so thats a very good sign they might be fakes. to make sure check the back for a porsch e parts number if you look on the back of the wheel... (you see the paddles on the front when they are mounted to the car, look on the back of the paddles, the part you dont see when they are mounted on the car) look on the back of one of the paddles on the back side of the wheel.. http://ebay2.ipixmedia.com/abc/M28/_...38ef17/i-4.JPG should see somthing like this.. either a 901# or 911#... that is the most important thing to look for. that number. that means it is a genuine porsche part. only real fuchs have those numbers. they may be a bit warn down depending on how your wheels are. also they may be gunked up with brake dust, gunk, etc.. so you may need to clean em some. (see how grimey it is in the pic above) the fox is a bit harder to spot in my experience. be sure to find a porsche parts number though. http://www.bbs912.org/bay9/images/pic12511.jpg |
oh and as far as tire size.. that is as close to speedo as you can get. my dad helped me pick out the right tire size when i was younger using his pirelli tire book... shows all the conversion charts, sizes, ratios etc.....
we studied, considered all.. so trust me... 195/70/14 is as close as you can get, with 14s. to some it matters if they have real fuchs or not. to others they could hardly care. the difference is the strength and the very light weight of real fuchs. if youre fuchs are indeed fake. and it really maters to you, where you absolutly must have a set of real fuchs, let me know. i have a second set of real 14 inch fuchs i am looking to get rid of. have never had em on a car in the 5 years ive owned em, still in the industrial surran type wrap they were shipped in. will even throw in center caps with em. if you want more info, pics etc, email me at woodstk699@aol.com with the subject 912 fuchs in the heading, so i know not to delete it (sorry get alot of spam). either way let me know what you find there, im more than glad to help |
My mate had a set of polished fakes and you can tell by really looking in to the make up of the material.
By looking deep in to a polished spoke you could see small bubbles for when it was cast. The org wheels polished look really smooth (but it could be a different make ) that's how we found out the difference and the weight too as mentioned good luck M SmileWavy |
Well it turns out that my fuchs are real just had to get through all the grim with a little blast in a friends parts cleaner bin. Well am I relieved they are exactly what the seller said they were so I am ordering my 195/70/14 Dunlops from Sears and getting them installed right away.

A simple way to quickly glean forged from cast and not just P car rims. Not 100% but very close. (P car rims the S# and the fox head is the way to go) If the rims are not mounted with tires and are not covered with stick on weights you can hold them by the center hole with one finger and tap the rim with something hard. Forged will ring like a tuning fork and most cast will just give a dull single ring. Sand cast are rough in the inside and pressure cast often have casting nub bumps in the inner surfaces.

My spare rim is orginal never used or touched, looks like its right off the show room floor, there is also a date stamped 3 69 on the inside of all 5 of mine at the center hub too look for.
