Bad Drive Home

Just got the 'lil beast running nicely and reved it up to 4500 in third and fourth on the way home from work. Cruising at 3600 rpm in fifth I heard some new interesting noises ... sort of metallic high pitch... that would vary with torgue. Going up hill or accelerating slightly it was quiet, coasting was noisier. I took it out of gear and coasted and the engine stalled. Parked the engine would start but with a bad rap from #1. Driving 'cause I had to with something banging and grinding in #1 it heated up real quick. Lucky I had to go only a mile before I could get it off the road.
What do you all think? Valve, Connecting rod, Pushrod ?
looks like my education will continue.

Pull the oil screen and see what you find, I had an engine with a rod out of it, looked like a Christmass tree shape of metal. Or Loose flywheel? I dont know if it would sound like yours?

Well I dropped the pan and the screen. Not what I'd like under my Xmas tree. Looks like a piston ring and some shards of a very lightweight cast alloy.
Does anybody sell just one piston assembley?
DRAT!

You can just replace one piston assembly, but the engine would be out-of-balance for one...not to mention the distinct possibility that you have more of the same material now in your oil system waiting to eat the rest of your bearings!!

I know it sucks but I'd plan a complete rebuild.

Blown Piston ::: Type IV ???

Well , I'm weighting the options. Considering parting out this engine which ran great (the moment before it failed) and buying a Type IV.
Or maybe one of "our group" would make an offer on the engine as is.
Any body tell me what years VW made the type IV and the specs? What engine do they still use in the old style Beetle that's made in Mexico or Brazil?
