Rear hub bearings

1968 912. Replaced all rear hub bearings and seals. When I torque the stub axle castle nut the hub locks up. Loosen the nut and the hub turns. Retorque and it locks up. Did this a few times with the same results. Any ideas?

Left out the spacer (#8) that sits between the inner races inside the carrier?

...or one of the bearings is not seated properly to the point the spacer is doing its job taking tighening force across the inner races. As I remember, the inner needle bearing is kind of a PITA where the outside roller bearing is fairly easy.

rear hub bearings

Hey Peter, thanks for the reply. The spacer is in place. I pressed the outer bearing onto the hub, put the large "O" ring on the bearing and drew the hub into the control arm using the castle nut on the stub axle. It seemed to draw in square and with relative ease. I pulled the hub out about 1/4" a couple of times and drew it back in with the castle nut. Again, it drew in nicely and it appeared to be fully seated. Same result. Torque the nut and the hub binds up, back off and it turns. It's got me beat.
